Story on TV3 news tonight was telling - government decided a year ago not to buy a dedicated fast response vessel for oil spills. That's more active than just not being prepared.

The only good thing that may come from this is putting a stop to the start of possibly risky off-shore drilling around New Zealand
I imagine the govt will desperately try to avoid mentioning it until after the election - then enthusiastically grab its ankles on our behalf to make up for those pesky credit downgrades and pie in the sky job projections.
"Balance the books", balancing environment against economy, mixed ownership model, etc.

Having all TV come from Auckland will of course eventually make all this go away as regional accents are more and more sidelined in popular culture
Real broadband means most audio-visual representations will be locally produced by cultures all over the world (our schools leading the way here), and broadcast TV will continue to lose ground as a dominant form. Diversity will increase at the expense of coherence. There's a challenge.

National, which is full of the same MPs that lost to Labour three times in a row, consciously avoided airing their usual policies in order to appear more centrist and win over swing voters who remembered how awful people like McCully, Brownlee, Smith, English, etc were the first time around.
The Hollow Men provides documented evidence of the same folk doing exactly that in the 2005 election campaign.

Nor are they limited to Auckland, though they are more common in conversations from Māori than Pākehā
Did wonder if Auckland's browner, younger population might be a factor.
