"We obviously want to see it kept in a tidy condition, so as houses are vacated they will be demolished," he said. "The land will be simply, I would imagine, just put into a rolling flat-type state and grassed."
It may be "some years" before the land could be engineered for residential sections again, he said.
"For a good number of years it will be open space and we'll want to make sure that it is in a state that reflects the sort of general amenity value of Christchurch."
Environmental and Engineering consultants Tonkin & Taylor estimate the total area of land to be abandoned at 350 hectares – just over twice the size of Hagley Park.

And my point is that insurance companies do not insure for government decisions.
Agreed. So homeowners should complain to the organisation who brokered the overall deal with the industry on their behalf. And that's not their insurance company.

It's like a bloody cartel. Aren't there laws against those?
The CERA enabling law gives government the power to do pretty much anything they like. Remember which parties voted for it, come November.

For those not playing at home, here is Drinnan's whine (last heading on page) about how those big bad interweb peoples called him names.
But a Herald item about taxpayer funding for Ladyhawke prompted such howls of indignation on the musos' website dubdotdash, I felt obliged to take part and the experience confirmed my impressions about blog debates.
...Inevitably the Ladyhawke debate was peppered with personal invective and swearing.
And here's the blog post by Peter McLennan he complained about (where you'll notice no such behaviour ever happened).
Those uppity peasants having opinions of their own! No longer being able to control the whole conversation sure is getting to some soft hacks, isn't it (happy now, John)?

So wrong. I hope we get journalists asking the government with some urgency how this appalling story reflects the intent and outcome of their lengthy backroom negotiations with the insurance industry.
