Someone pointed out you get the real date/time if you hover - but I'm with you. Am having trouble matching up the listing of latest posts with what is shown in each thread.
Probably best to put comments about this stuff in the other thread, so they get seen along with the others.

To keep track, I’m now using the Recent Discussions panel on the front page because the Cafe section on the System page does not (yet?) tell me who posted the last comment.
I’ve suggested to Matt that emphasising the name and time of the last commenter would be useful (probably black text rather than bolder grey). I’m far more interested in that than the number of reads or comments which the new design highlights. But I trust that things will evolve.

I’m talking individual comments, not threads.
I recall Emma saying when we discussed potential changes some time ago (can’t find the thread) that one of the sites she moderated had a “pin” feature to mark the last post you’d read.
I’m broadening that idea, but the key is being able to jump quickly back to them in busy threads. Listing all your Favourites in one place like Twitter does would be another step

I guess that large block of white background could be changed into a more soothing colour like the one in this comment box (though there'd be other flow-on changes required)

I realise this is more than a minor one, but could we add a Favourite function and a way to jump back through those in any thread?
Then I could use it to mark the last post I'd read and go straight back there. As well as highlight those gems I might want to quote from, especially when I'm playing catchup in busy conversations.

I agree about some tweaks to address how us heavy users navigate.
Can I stick up for the blank space on the right. Wider columns of text are known to be harder to read for most people. Aligning everything left is actually an accessibility feature – which also happens to deliver good results for mobile devices and is more manageable technically when resizing for different zoom levels and devices. Not to say other accessibility issues are absent…
