John Key said on tv3 news that EQC had $6b in cash and 16b total. Given his relaxed approach to facts, I'd take that with a sackload of salt, though he did seem serious when he said it.

I saw the head of police say there had been a couple of guys who threw bricks through show windows. More active than opportunistically grabbing stuff, but certainly not a rash of lawlessness either. Putting them in stocks might be good punishment as I doubt their fellow citizens would be amused.

Wellington City Council has driven a massive project to identify and strengthen earthquake-prone buildings.
Chch council had similar work proposed - but resisted by commercial property owners, of course. Guess we'll all bail them out through increased insurance premiums now.

am I the only person looking at those pix and thanking the deity I believe in (and all the ones I don't) that this didn't happen at rush hour yesterday?
Given where I was at the time, I certainly am. It's a surreal feeling to be woken with that news. Glad to hear people are OK and I hope more of our friends will check in here. Relieved that the worst for the people I was at the GPs conference with seems likely to have been a trudge to relocate to lodgings out of the CBD or maybe some cuts from flying glass. Fingers crossed, anyway.
Could be a huge repair job of all the water/drainage/road systems given the swampy ground the city is built on. Lots of work to make the city safe from disease. And the beautiful heritage brick buildings are a loss for us all.

South Canterbury Finance would not have lasted long without the government guarantee. It was already out of control by mid-2008 as a result of Hubbard's decision to allow his wonder boy manager Lachie McLeod to bet too much of the bank on property investment, over-valued dairy farms and (of course) related party transactions. Not sticking to South Canterbury's knitting was the core mistake.
