Those were unimpressive, stumbling performances. I'm hoping people pay more attention in either case to what the candidates have *done* over what they say they will. I haven't followed either candidate closely, Craig, but I've heard substantive detail from Brown at least about local board arrangements and advocating for law changes for some bits of the structure that are probably too broken.
And please everyone pay attention to the Councillors, not just the mayoral candidates - it's the team with the most votes around that table that has the biggest say. Well, other than the CCO Boards..

Oh, and the govt has appointed Auckland's CCO Boards. In particular you'll recognise the name of the new head of the hugely powerful Transport CCO.

Rich, you're right the aluminum production would move elsewhere but the issue with Tiwai is more about the opportunity cost of such a huge and hugely subsidised chunk of our renewable electricity production.
We (NZ) could be using that for better things than helping foreign-owned company profits in an industry that seems to have no potential for sustainable growth of high skilled jobs and export enterprises. Carbon pricing brings the economics into sharp relief.
Someone wrote about it this year but I don't recall where.

But the wrong people make money if we say insulate homes and hot water cyclinders as opposed to building new power stations or roads. It's just not right.
