I reckon the issue is not my own opinion about drugs or Prast, but the likely response of a majority of other electors. I don't rate his chances, having seen what the public is currently supporting.

Despite some admirable sentiment, in that one article he also talks about stopping building an almost-completed prison on government land that Council has little control over, and allowing cars back onto Grafton Bridge without seeming to understand why it's now bus-only. Competence might come into the deicsion for some folk, along with character.

I like to give sufficient clues every so often so that if I ever got caught snorting something off a hooker, people would say "well, didn't you ever read his blog?"

Of course it would help if the references weren't so well disguised as tropical fish..

Peter Wells' Jewel's Darl, starring a young Georgina Beyer, and an adaptation of C.K. Stead's A Fitting Tribute; also a kitchen sink drama starring Jennifer Ward-Lealand.

Prime's great History of NZ telly series featured brief clips from both.

Nah... I've done q quick mental audit of shows that were retrospectively diminished by hanging around long past their creative expiry date

Craig, I meant this discussion here now - cos I'm feeling excited rather than melancholic. Going out on top is a great tactic for any show. I'll be more ready to talk about that at the end of the series, is all

  • Random Play: Fiji #2: The Times, they…,

    Idiot/Savant has an update.

Yesterday the Melanesian Spearhead Group, a regional trade and political forum parallel, cancelled its planned leadership summit in Fiji over concerns about Fiji's military regime.

    ...

Today, Fiji responded by expelling the Australian ambassador. It's a classic example of the regime's paranoia. Everything bad that happens to Fiji is not the result of the regime's own incompetence, but of Australian and New Zealand plotting. And this extends to being snubbed by their neighbours, who could not possibly have any commitment to democracy of their own, but must have been put up to it by others.

Pleased you didn't run into trouble personally, Graham. I'd be interested to hear more about the Pacific Forum and the relationships with other Pacific nations. It's not just NZ/Australia or Asia nations with chequebooks who define Fiji's current external political situation, and there are others grappling with similar issues.

  • Hard News: The McCully Touch,

what other "support" was Pete Bethune expecting from the Foreign Affairs Minister?

When a New Zealand ship is rammed in international waters, yes, I expect our government to take that up forcefully with the nation concerned - especially when they are illegally killing whales for commercial gain in an international sanctuary.

Instead, what do we get from whimpering little McLapdog? A prompt arselicking for the Japanese, that's what. Followed up with a litte light leghumping.

It's not just "the legal proceedings" against Bethune but what came before. Some political intervention is called for, and there are ways to do that which don't involve interfering with another nation's internal legal system. The Australian government's actions against Japanese whaling in the Southern Ocean provide a useful comparison.

And the perpetrators of the Rainbow Warrior Bombing were standing by their principles too

Oh give us a break. They were professional soldiers/spies. They blew up a ship and killed a man. No equivalence at all.

I think Pete Bethune's a bit of a dick, actually.

That's fine too. It's not about him specifically anyway, more about sovereignty and having a government willing to stand up for its citizens and its international obligations, not roll over at the first hint of jellimeat.

  • Hard News: The McCully Touch,

The ironic thing is that, if it wasn't for the millions of dollars our government is shovelling the way of Big Sport, the wingnuts might have a point that the moronic rantings of Haden are a private matter between him, his talkback radio employer and the NZFU.

Not so. The privilege of broadcasting to the public brings responsibilities for any organisation and person. Ask another bully Paul Henry about that.

TVNZ took insufficient action after ruling Breakfast host Paul Henry had gone too far when he described singer Susan Boyle as "retarded" on its morning show, the Broadcasting Standards Authority (BSA) has ruled.

    ...

"While Mr Henry's cruel comments and actions were brief, the message that viewers would have received was that people with intellectual disabilities can be identified and characterised by certain physical features, and are appropriate subjects for ridicule."

The majority of the BSA considered that Mr Henry's comments, "had the effect of reinforcing and legitimising particularly repugnant attitudes towards intellectually disabled people".

    Full judgement here.
