  • Hard News: The McCully Touch,

Whatever happened to robust debate about things?

Yeah, like our entrenched habits of saying "it was just a joke" as Dyan notes or more recently of whining "it's PC gone mad". Or maybe they're talking about Cresswell's blog?

Bully Haden lacks the balls to say what he really believes unless he's surrounded by Deaker's senile support group and safely insulated from accountability by a nice warm tv studio and a cadre of simpering apologists led (if I can use the word) by McCully.

Philip, that has merit. Hero Parade crowds were 100-200k so we know the capacity is there. And it's just off the official walking route to/from the stadium.

More McCully. In light of Bethune's media statement, Scott Yorke lampoons our govt lapdogs of the Japanese.

Key of course tries to twist that into blaming the diplomats rather than himself, craven McCully or the other yesterday's men of his cabinet. And we wonder where people get the idea that this is what "leadership" means.

"We gave him all the support that we possibly could and, in the end, he's had a sentence that has allowed him to return to New Zealand but to somehow lash out and blame our people in Japan under the leadership of our ambassador there, Ian Kennedy, who has done a tremendous job for him, I think it's just ungrateful."

Thanks, Christopher. Surely if that were put together with the Viaduct, its new Events Centre and the private hospitality venues of both precincts, there'd be enough capacity - and choice.

Someone was questioning on Labour's Red Alert blog whether the RWC hosting rights came with a requirement to create a sponsor's product only area. Former RWC Minister Mallard didn't know.

I heard on the news that Haden had his phone off and was basically in hiding from the rest of the world.

Rubbish. TV news had audio clips of several phone calls to Haden's place during the period in question.

Recordari, the Bond St overbridge is part of the anointed walking route that is meant to take a large chunk of fans on foot from the waterfront, up Queen St, along K Road and Gt North Rd to the game. Imagine the watering holes en route. I suspect they may need to install temporary high barriers on the bridge to prevent the catastrophe you imagine.

I think the problem with reyling on Kingsland or Dominion Rd villages for pre/post-match entertainment are (other than being way too small) their isolation from concentrations of hospitality and accommodation venues and from transport interchanges.

They have a victim complex to sustain in the face of contrary evidence. Must be exhausting - though easier if you slag actual disadvantaged groups, I guess.

Lindsay Perigo speaks for the downtrodden and oppressed old white men of New Zealand, calling Haden's neanderthal utterances "courageous". Oooh yes, them disgruntled wimmins have teeth you know.

"It is to be hoped Sky TV will not now lose its nerve as it did over the Murray Mexted affair, and will keep Andy Haden on as a fearless and robust commentator in a nation sadly lacking in fearless commentary in all fields," Perigo concludes.

Also features the text of Haden's final bleat which sets new standards for non-apology (even surpassing efforts by politicians). Hopefully someone can show him what a "beat-up" actually feels like.

McCully is confirmed as a cringing ninny who can't even fire someone before they have a chance to throw their toys out of the cot on their own terms. Immature, fearful and unprincipled yesterday's men, the lot of them. Not the public face we deserve to show the world or each other.
