moustache-gate and retard-gate aren't exactly political
Only if you're an individualist - which I think you'd agree is more the province of the right than left in political terms.
I just can't agree that Paul Henry is a completely unmitigated right wing nut job
Paul Henry is clearly capable of being intelligent - which makes his unrepentent and cowardly bullying all the more unforgiveable. He had another verbal crack at women just before the whaling interview, so nothing much seems to have changed. The man's a snivelling, childish turd who is unworthy of airtime.
I don't think there are lessons to learn in this example about fact/credential checking. I think there are lessons to learn about who and what is news.
Agreed. I think the point is more the rush to give fawning airtime to certain types of people - and they're hardly feminist trade unionists, are they?
Let's not be surprised when a commercial network behaves in a way that maximises ratings.
Certainly - so where's the alternative again?

(moustache-gate and retard-gate aren't exactly political)
your lapsed libertarian is showing, sir

And as Jeremy says on t'other thread, Mr Henry gave this fresh tie-wearing nobody more respect that an established expert who happened to be a woman and from Greenpeace to boot (the horror).

what I believe is far more important, which is preparing for an interview, and preparing research and facts to rebut the claims the interviewee is likely to put forward
As others have noted, part of this stunt's charm is that Mr Henry could be relied upon to struggle with 'rebutting' ideas close to his own right-wing delusions.

So much here and I'm frustratingly distracted by work. I won't get into relativism in identity though it's a big issue with this whole area.
Socially-constructed power is the difference between being called darkie and honky. Racism is not a level playing field, and it's so much about context. Insults are a form of power but they're also prompted by perceptions of relative powerlessness.
Bart, that's certainly different to my experience and it sounds horrible. Can I ask what was it about the situations you mentioned that meant your insulters felt able to be make you a target (eg: more of them, you were in their territory, etc)? What bigger context were you aware of around the time and place (eg: Bastion Point in the news, prominent social or political changes)? And what other options do you reckon you and they could see for yourselves?

Craig, you really don't see any difference in having a go at people who are contextually situated as weak or as strong? You seem to have a strong sense of fairness. I'm curious what it means to you when you hear people say things like "speaking truth to power"?
I am not disagreeing with your assessment of Mr Henry's character. In the context of television gatekeeping as opposed to other spheres, the producers and their bosses have the ultimate power (including keeping presenters on the leash).
Yes, sometimes they are out-powered by an influential interviewee - notably those with real-world connectedness like politicians or the wealthy. However, I don't believe that applies to either Boyle or Stephanie Mills, though either of them has more power and mana elsewhere in ways that count.

I recall there were other theories proffered about losing eyesight :)

Craig, what do you make of The Chaser? Room for satire?
Oh, and what Philip said.

I presume SKY will be offering this one
pay per chew

It just gets better - Jono's previous 8 yolk fake news story with grubby Mr Henry and his producers punked again. No wonder they're embarrassed.
