  • Hard News: Changing Times,

The gatekeeping role handed to commercial radio programmers seems to be a weak point, to say the least.

There are ways now to get audiences involved in helping determine where funding support could go - alongside some multi-disciplinary expertise so it's not wall-to-wall pop/rock.

Can't pick winners any more than in other fields, but a wider range of tracks, clips, performers and creators deserve a crack at the limited support to reflect the variety of our nation's voices. And perhaps make that more in the form of mentoring, professional services and global marketing (including online and other channels) rather than just a wad of cash.

  • Hard News: Changing Times,

There's clearly complexity in the way music and broadcasting (and they are not the same thing) are funded and organised. Current tussles over copyright seem relevant, as is this court case.

No one is saying the system is working well. We are lucky to have some of the people who know a lot about all this in this community. The rest of us perhaps need to breathe and take the time to read the source material - or I'd say we're in for a lot more bold italics.

it got out of a late model Audi and air-kissed him on both cheeks....

Chortle. I mis-read the central part of that sentence, yet it still made perfect sense in the context of Mr Herkt's observations.

    you made the Herald

Another NZPA story sourced from blogs, bless them.

Green said the sole funding so far came from its members. It had employed two part time coordinators but it had yet to figure out how they would be funded, as it was still early days.

"I would love to get funding from the tobacco industry," he said.

And Inwood firmly maintained ACR received no funding from tobacco companies or himself but purely from members' subscriptions.

"It's running off the smell of an oily rag."

Employ people and then figure out to pay them? Yeah right.

None of the Auckland shops listed as "members" on ACR's website said they were in fact paying members. All but one said they had never even heard of the association.

    Ouch

  • OnPoint: Astrotobacco,

take a gander at what they issue press releases about.

Oh, I've been aware of NZACA under their previous name HCPNZ though I didn't know what company they were keeping. They're not at all shy about speaking on behalf of the elderly, though I have no problem with them addressing industry issues. I also sympathise with their position on the relationship between govt funding and decent pay for their staff, though of course the broader question of whether institutional arrangements provide best value and results is not something they're likely to address.

"Carrick Graham is now following you on Twitter!"

and aren't you making it worth his while. :)

Feeling left out of the stalking love, can I perhaps controversially ask what aged care has in common with tobacco, whaling and shonky finance companies?

How interesting that the private rest home operators have rebranded as the "Aged Care Association" when all the trends are towards home-based care for older people rather than herding them into residential services (which double as long-term property investments).
