It's about the advertising industry's need for comfort

Does anyone do the equivalent of those Q ratings (?) for TV personalities?
I for one would love to assure those tame agency decison-makers that my ears won't be going anywhere near a radio show featuring Mr Roberts' dulcet tones. Mind you, fellow citizens persist in finding Paul Henry "funny"..

  • Hard News: Misadventure and Muppetry,

For the policy wonks among us, MSD did some research in 2005 about Sickness Benefit and Invalid Benefit dynamics. A particular motivation for the research was to check transfers from other benefits, as there was some public contention at the time that unemployment numbers were being made to look better.

Their careful and cautious conclusions were that about half the increases in both benefit types were due to inevitable demographic changes, and the rest to other factors (see their concluding remarks on pages 103 and 104 for a brief overview).

It is complex stuff with lots of graphs and numbers. I do not want to risk mischaracterising the results, but look forward to reading what others make of it and may have a crack when I have some time and energy soon.

The student union was only contributing about a fifth of bfm's annual income by the late 1980s, with adverts counting for the rest. Space in the student union building probably helped (did the station pay rent?).

To give some perspective, that AUSA funding was about twice the entire budget of other small b-net stations in places like Palmy. In fact, bfm's import vinyl budget was more.

There's more to sport than Rugby Sevens, and more to travel restrictions than sport.

all those years between 2000 and 2008

What, before the Dec 2006 coup we were talking about, you mean. Again, keep up the humour.

  • Hard News: Media freedom in the Pacific,

I understand the political situation in Fiji has been complex for many years but the time for stronger action - with the carefully negotiated support of Pacific Forum members - came when the most recent unelected coup-mongers announced they were cancelling elections. NZ acted.

Recent relaxation of travel restrictions is just that - recent. Same with media crackdowns. "But Helen did it too" is a particularly laughable defense in the context of the Key government's craven toadying backdowns on matters like climate change and whale slaughter that undo years of solid diplomacy and reduce our mana in the Pacific and beyond.

You don't get to just have the smiley photo ops without the scrutiny. Well, unless you're crafting a banana republic.

    Well done.

what we call “Rocket Park” in Mt Albert

I doubt many call it the "Mt Albert War Memorial Reserve".

Perhaps the lack of range in Whitcoulls and Borders is because of things like this.

    Love that response letter.
