Glad you enjoyed the Rev, Geoff. As local niche sites, what do you make of Grownups compared with Kiwiboomers?

Putting tables all down Kingsland's closed-off main drag, but still only hold one in sixty ticketholders. Trains similarly not the whole answer, especially because new ones still ages away.

I don't know where the "walking bus" term came from (never seen it elsewhere). It will be just like the unruly crowds before and after any large sports event like the Sevens. Auckland's CBD has much of the large visitor accommodation and is also where all transport networks converge.

Someone (jarbury?) recently proposed adding a dedicated busway to Ian McKinnon Drive and the beginning of Dominion Rd. Queen St could have dedicated buslanes while the tournament is in town and there'd be a clear path all the way from Britomart to the stadium's Cricket Ave. Would cost bugger all and eminently doable in time.

this very attitude cost us the V8's

That one was a matter of consent rather than keenness or funding, I was briefed at the time (other stories welcome).

Detailed preparations did not find a way to avoid shutting down a central and unduplicable part of the road network for a week (allowing setup and packdown). Hamilton does not have the same issue, and even Welli had other ways around their inner-city circuit (and much better public transport options).

All this in-secret back-room spending on Megatropolis' tab

And about half the new city's spending - on transport - is currently proposed to be kept secret from the public if significant pressure is not applied now for Nact cronies to get their hand out of the cookie jar.

Hence the rather forceful tone Len Brown is taking about it.

One of my first priorities, if elected, will be to appoint new directors to Auckland Transport, and to rewrite its statement of intent. I would insist on there being a direct report into the Mayor’s office, and a close relationship with the new Council’s transport committee. As Mayor, I will expect to be seeing all reports and all board papers.

Didn't notice anyone post it, so here's Paul's comment that's been gracing the Herald site's front page all afternoon:

This city needs a long-term plan for its waterfront, not a fairground for some sport tourists.

    On ya.

The present plans rely heavily on a walking-bus operation along Great North Road and over Bond Street. That's a hell of a long way to be walking without shelter if the skies open the way they sometimes do in September.

Imagine the parched fans after drinking their way up Queen St and K Rd, meeting the desert of caryards and small industry along Gt North Rd and Bond St. I'd be applying for a bar license along that stretch..

millions of dollars (really is that now) being spent every month by the ATA - debt that will be loaded onto the Auckland ratepayers.

Yes, been going on silently since day one - govt dictates change, but Aucklanders get to pay for it. Costs for similar exercises overseas are 9 figure ones. Slack fcking journos largely not addressing this story.
