AM broadcasts of all Parliament sittings
If they didn't like the sound of their own voices so much, I'm sure that one would be for the chop. :)

might not be a bad way to start the process.
already done

Please tell me your joking Sacha.
to engage on the world stage against other city/regionsSteve, it's just how economic development is going now. Attracting good businesses, entrepreneurs, investors and skilled workers is increasingly competitive at a city/region level with marketing strategies to match. Used to be countries. Not my decision, and I'd rather be agreeing wholeheartedly over a beer or better.

I do not believe I have read anyone here arguing that RNZ Concert should be scrapped.
Some of us have said it's less defensible in its current form than others think it is. There have been some good responses, and wouldn't you rather have that debate here than be unprepared with the Minister and the shallowmedia?

Head-Desk concerto
Teeshirt-worthy
-
would "creative and flexible" include a Radio NZ music publishing business?
Great idea - another revenue stream as well as a reach multiplier
-
if you think that there are other underappreciated genres that are equally as relevant, ask for Concert to play them too, don't just axe Concert.
Agree
It's pretty clear that Concert FM is prioritises a European conception of high-concept art music over everything else.
But that's simply a programming fault that they've been getting away with a bit longer than they should have. You still need the cultural showcase, just as with museums, libraries, whatever their programming approach.
Quite
Slashing the tires on the cultural ice cream truck is, well, barbaric.
Nice
Does the devil really need any advocates in this debate, at this precise point?
Think of it as warming yourself up for the inevitable scrap over what I have to agree with Craig and others is purely a political decision about what gets funded properly and what doesn't.
Saying that rich white folk are a prime target of RNZ Concert might actually persuade this govt to fund it - aspirational, etc, you understand..

A lot of other musical forms receive public funding as well: a fair amount of creative electronica/indie musicians gets help from Creative New Zealand.
Oh really? - here's the Arts Board's 2009/2010 grants for music:
175 East: towards a new work and performance featuring Dylan Lardelli;
Steve Abel: towards recording and mastering a
new album;
Atoll Ltd: to produce a CD of New Zealand
string quartet music;
Brigid Bisley: towards a new work for string
quartet to be premiered at the 2011 Adam
Chamber Festival in Nelson;
Philip Dadson and Richard Nunns: towards
travel to South Africa and South America to
participate and perform in LATITUDE 35
festivals;
Gisborne Rotary Charitable Trust: towards
professional fees for jurors at the Gisborne
music competition;
Jeff Henderson: towards research, composition
and development of music systems for
performance work;
Manukau Symphony Orchestra: towards a new
work commission;
Pradipta Mukherjee: towards professional
development in the Rabindra Sangeet artform;
Nelson Composers Workshop: towards the
2010 Nelson composers’ workshop;
Nimby Opera: towards touring ‘The Cunning
Little Vixen’ to Auckland, Kerikeri, Hamilton
and Tauranga;
NZTrio: towards commissioning Judy Bailey to
create a jazz/classical fusion piece;
Madeleine Pierard: towards training at the
National Opera School in London;
Stroma New Music Ensemble: towards
commissioning of new work;
Stroma New Music Ensemble: towards the
2010 performance programme of two concerts;
The Audio Foundation: towards the 2010
Altmusic programme.Frightfully diverse, eh what.

This is not about "art" and nor is it mainly about branding local buildings or publications. It is a design exercise to support one of our largest organisations to engage on the world stage against other city/regions. Those won't be relying on feelgood amateur guesswork for their branding.
a good designer will simply say "okay, so what are the requirements... what must the logo attempt to do, for whom and to whom?" Perhaps that's the area best left for public engagement: developing the brief.
Already done over quite some time for the Brand Auckland exercise - recommend reading their small site.
Imagine say the blue version of their logo with the word "Council" added beneath. Maybe I could submit that..

It has always interested me that when arts funding is under threat, there is always a rush to defend the high culture sector (ballet, symphony orchestra et al)
I agree, and a broader understanding of "culture" is hardly controversial.
I support public funding for RNZ Concert on the basis of its contribution to our local cultures - including commissioning, recording and interviewing composers and performers of ALL genres and all ethnicities.
I agree Euro classical and opera is part of that mix - but it's only one, and I'll take some convincing it does not currently enjoy disproportionate subsidies and other resources. I'm heartened to hear that world music has a foot in the door at RNZ Concert.
Mr Litterick, just look around you next time you're amidst the sea of subsidised blue rinse at a philharmonia gig and tell me why that deserves funding which similarly creative electronica/indie musicians are not offered. Same with awards and music schools at universities.
I want to see better support for all creative endeavours, and especially for what young people here find most relevant, including their diverse heritage.
