Well, as Sacha has pointed out, I seem to have conflated "I didn't like it" with "It's overrated"
Hey, nothing personal. We were a party to the conflation - that's communication for you. I like Geoff's word "resonance".
Sigue Sigue Sputnik were also good by me, along with easier to find mainstream contenders like (ulp) Thomas Dolby and Berlin as I got into that sound. Fortunately I didn't feel compelled to choose at the time, though I imagine space under the arm would have been a constraint for those UK cool kids.
Geoff, check this:

Oh I think the equivalent statement would be "I think aspirin is overrated".
If Rich had just said "I didn't like it" I suspect the intake of breath wouldn't have been so audible.

a study of women interacting with children, the women behaved very differently towards children they were told were boys
I remember that one from our first year Psychology textbook. Parents of both genders spent twice as long talking with toddlers who they thought were girls (pink clothing), holding them close and interacting attentively. They tended to put the 'boys' (blue clothing) out on the floor with toys and left them to it. Somewhat undercuts your argument, sorry, though its probably right for older boys.
are limited to certain racial/socioeconomic groups of women
Don't recall but it was conducted quite a while ago so I'd say you're right.

I sit corrected :)

Blue Monday was the first electronic music I remember hearing. Profound impact then and since.
I'm also impressed that the first track to push the 12'' single vinyl format seems to still be its biggest seller, several decades later. Mind you, might just be that CDs came in at the right time to rescue us from any Lionel Richie or Huey Lewis ones.

Probably harder to organise for some..
