trying to convince each other that you represent mainstream public opinion

Haven't seen anyone around here claim that except you, old man.

Oh, and I liked this opinion from Danyl:

I think they’re testing the water; I wouldn’t be too surprised to see a coded attack on feminism: a speech to (say) a church group or sports club on how New Zealand boys are ‘being left behind’ would do nicely.

what I thought he was trying to do was call bullshit on some of what the Maori Party are doing.

Then why not just do that? - more than enough ammo.

And it should be able to be done without the race card being played.

Agreed. Goff's message would have been stronger without the distracting whistling noise. He was delivering a prepared speech, with its title and contents deliberately chosen. How hard could it have been to avoid inflammatory phrases? It's a tired, desperate ploy at best.

The subsequent discussion sure is interesting though, with good points scattered widely. Lew at Kiwipolitico delves into the meta-language on his way to this conclusion:

The message from Goff’s Labour party is loud and clear: we make no apologies for the decisions taken while being chased by the Brash Iwi/Kiwi monster, and are now prepared to do it all again if need be. This is a damned shame for the country, and for the party.

Labour had a great opportunity to mend its bridges with Māori, as the māori party is burdened with an appalling ETS and its more and more fraught partnership with National — and instead of doing so they set another charge and detonated it.

The Māori electorate will not support a Labour party which has declared itself the party of blue-collar Pākehā rednecks who are sick of ‘those Māoris’ and their complaining about things which happened the century before last.

Beautiful. Thanks, Ben. Great examples of the value of connecting face to face. I was struck by Gio's story too. It's easier to commit to some ideas when you can take in more of the other person than words on a screen, when you get a stronger sense of where they're coming from.

I reckon there's no way of meeting everyone you might want to at one of these things. You're more likely to have a couple of quality long conversations with whoever you click with on the night. And then more on other nights. Plenty of time.

Just to put the show on the other foot, how would you feel if my argument was: 'if ACTA goes ahead, the internet isn't going to stop, it's only going to be damaged to a degree we can't be sure of until we get the proper data, so quite moaning and we'll see what happens, and if it turns out bad, then adapt or die.'
    Sounds nice, doesn't it?

Peter, you've actually described the status quo.

That's why people are up in arms - if nothing is changed, that is exactly what will happen, with New Zealand citizens having no input at all.

We do however have a more than tentative idea of the likely damage. And many of us support finding a way to fix things now that works for creators as well as consumers.
