a piece of art (whether it's a piece of writing, a painting, a film, whatever) really belongs to the viewer once the artist puts it out there?
That whatever "meaning" or message the artist originally intended to make is necessarily coloured and re-defined by the person viewing it
And I'd suggest it belongs to the viewer before it's created as well.
An artist does not work in a vacuum and our collectively negotiated sense of what's meaningful surrounds any act of creativity. Not to say there's nothing new or individual. The process and its results are certainly magical and beautiful. Footnotes and all.
I am suggesting that cultural ownership and accountability skews more towards all of us than to individual author-ities. However current trends in intellectual property protection for corporate middlemen are far from reflecting that. I acknowledge that unlike films or music, copyright in books often remains with the author.
Hope that wasn't too.. arid.

Completely off topic but fantastic work by Pundit on the energy efficiency part of the Greens' agreement with the Nats quietly imploding over the last few months. Key is no doubt relaxed in his slacks.
Overview and Fitzsimons hereself.

I think it's a risky assumption to declare that people convince judges because they come from "well-off, connected families".
I think it's riskier to say that it doesn't have an impact. Not saying anything about Mr Roberts' situation, more picking up on the reasoning from Mr Ashby. Should have thrown in the phrase "social capital" - which can apply beyond class or wealth, especially when it comes to knowing your way through the legal system.

I love the smell of mofo in the morning.
Does the phrase primus inter pares mean anything to you?
Having studied neither law nor Latin, not really. I'm guessing it means "first amongst equals"? Do feel free to simply say that in the first place.

When you make a proposal to a judge it helps if you are credible.
Where credible = from a background and lifestyle that the judge approves of. Hard to see how that might favour white folk from well-off, connected families..
