I'm always amazed by how much influence the Business Roundtable has
.. given how obviously wrong they are about how the world works. C'mon, 15 years until 1999 wasn't long enough to see that?
If Max Bradford is indeed still among us (hovering on the dry right wing like a grey ghastly ghostly adjunct to the likes of Roger Douglas) I would LOVE for him to find the guts to tell the nation again how he was "acting on the basis of the best advice" when he screwed the nation so royally...
Totally agree. And Maurice Williamson can tell us how his prolonged, handwringing gutlessness with Telecom did us all such a favour in the 90s. Real broadband anyone? Bet Rod Deane still sniggers every time he thinks of his impotent ex-Minister.

the same ballpark as why I oppose state-funding of political parties.
Good point. I'd forgotten the church role as aggregator of individual goodwill in the same way as political parties aggregate political intent.

I'm persuaded by the broader approach to spiritual wellbeing mentioned by Giovanni - that poets and suchlike also ought to be exempt now that the churches no longer have a monopoly. Or we cut that ground for exemption completely, which seems simpler.
So, social services run by churches, sure. Preaching, not so much.
However, Density is an exception and as others have said where's the problem crying out for a fix. -
I agree, 3410. I sure wasn't thinking of subsidised cornflakes when I said "good use".

Some churches have, as I understand it, property portfolios worth hundreds of millions of dollars in Auckland alone.
I believe the missionaries were quite fond of land. What with all those delicious untaxed capital gains year on year, I imagine the leveraged income and the rents would be quite sustaining. Not to say they don't put it to good use.

I'm not entirely sure what would be better about going via Rosebank.
I'd defer to Joshua about cost being the issue, and I really don't know the detail.
However, I'm confident the decision wasn't about driver reluctance to go an extra 3kms as Roughan swallowed. Either way are about the same overall distance, especially if you are going west along the motorway rather than doubling back east towards the CBD. It is designed as a ring route, after all.

I have a problem with
thisIdiotSavant shares your disgust.
The benefit is, as you would expect from its name, for invalids - people unable to work due to ongoing sickness, injury, or disability. Its paid to terminal cancer patients, people with no limbs, and the totally blind. Work-testing these people, particularly against a background where disability is the most widespread form of workplace discrimination, is simply an exercise in sadism.

Are you saying the Aussies suck? :)
