But I don't agree (paraphrasing @Sacha, say) that understanding the communication is all that matters.
You'll note I was talking about nitpicking, as over "less" vs "fewer". I really do not care how someone gets the message across so long as it gets across. Still room for beauty and diversity in expression, however.

That was a prime example not of differing ideas but of a wilfully unpleasant approach to conversation by just one person. I don't know anywhere offline that would put up with such behaviour.
If this is a conversation space, then why bend over backwards to placate someone, anyone, who is unwilling to be part of a discussion? Or unable; it makes little practical difference unless there's evidence of commitment to improve that the community can trust.

Professionally, I have to be able to make the distinction. The tactics for modding and otherwise dealing with Tinks and Trolls are quite different.

In practical terms, I tend to agree with that. Allowing persistent non-listening in a discussion erodes the community regardless of motivation. Troll is as troll does, perhaps?
