In Melbourne, they took out a road -- a road! -- to make way for a broad pedestrian concourse
Whereas in Auckland we took out the planned pedestrian concourse between Britomart and Vector Arena (you can still see the beginning until it becomes a narrow service lane with wheelie bins beside the supermarket) - so that property developers could erect more of their cheap ugly apartments and offices. Now spectators have to wend around inadequate footpaths and spill onto the roads. Screw the crowds, I'm alright Jack.

Unfortunately it is for some reason unacceptable to moderate the free market, even to suggest such a a thing is greeted with the kind of horror that is usually associated with the most heinous of crimes.
We have few genuine pure markets. Our business 'leaders' and their cronies are more than happy to see markets constrained in their own interest. Like for example underwriting finance companies. Or topping up wages with Working For Families. Or subsidising roads over rail for truckers. You get the picture.
if we want morally responsible behaviour from companies
then we have to insist on that - and make life very hard for those who fail or refuse

The biggest failing of many IT graduates is their lack of empathy and understanding of what the people they're working with are trying to do, and an inability to communicate their knowledge with them.
True. Courses in Business, Public Policy and such could be useful. I'd also like to see the IT courses explicitly tackle communication as a core subject. Not expecting every developer to be able to slot into an account manager's role but a better shared baseline skillset and awareness would help.

We are instructed by the ministry to stop doing it.
Do any media know that part?

We obviously have different ideas about what constitutes pissy language. I looked again at what the union media release said:
“Schools take bullying very seriously and encourage a zero-tolerance approach. They don’t need to be bullied into action,” says NZEI President Ian Leckie.
“They are already very aware of their responsibilities in terms of providing a safe environment for all their students and their programmes and policies around bullying are checked by the Education Review Office.”
“The government is naive to think just writing letters to schools demanding they review their anti-bullying policies will make the problem go away. The causes of bullying are complex and often reflect wider social issues. Parents, whanau and the wider community have a huge role to play in identifying bullying and changing behaviours,” Mr Leckie adds.

expecting companies or shareholders to have any sort of morals
Meeting the interests of broader stakeholders is hardly new thinking - it's the virulently neolib focus on only those of share owners that's comparatively recent.

You know, the safety and wellbeing of children might just be marginally more important than a media slap-fight between the Minister and the union.
Most grown-ups are capable of distinguishing between content and process. The union's complaint was aobut the process, wasn't it?

I’d love to know where Mediaworks draws the line from a moral point of view, rather than a monetary one
I agree. I'm just not expecting they'll tell us. I guess we'll find out when fatuous Mr Henry attacks the next disadvantaged group. He made the mistake of having a go at migrant doctors, forgetting they were doctors and therefore subject to establshment protection. Maybe he'll slip up again.

BSA-regulated complaints process
That includes the internal first stage of complaints directly to the broadcaster, not just to the BSA. The whole process is set down in the law.
I doubt TVNZ's management were unaware of the hundreds of complaints when they made their decision. Nor were their advertisers. And it was hardly the first time.
