A lack of empathy is not inevitable, on the contrary, we aspies often appear to withdraw because other’s emotions are all too apparent and we just can’t read them in real time.
Saw a couple of articles saying that Aspies are too sensitive and not able to filter out emotional input around us, much like people with schizophrenia with sensory overload. The aloofness that others notice is a coping mechanism, inhibiting a timely response as you say. Made sense to me - but who knows if that's universal? :)

Ahem. Most people on disability benefits are not "barely functioning". The problem is that our employment arrangements, education and transport systems, built environments and social attitudes do not work properly for everyone. Fundamental barriers exclude many disabled New Zealanders from making their full contribution. Look there before you demonise individuals.

Russell has just dug up this damn fine analysis from a BBC editor about the nature of modern protest - highly recommended read, full of great thoughts.
At the heart of it all are young people, obviously; students; westernised; secularised. They use social media - as the mainstream media has now woken up to - but this obsession with reporting "they use twitter" is missing the point of what they use it for.

Richard has his tongue so far down the back of Jeremy's trousers he could forge a career as the back end of a pantomime horse. His attempt to foster some Clarkson-like maverick status with his "edgy" humour is truly tragic. He reminds you of the squirt at school as he hangs round Clarkson the bully, as if to say, "I'm with him". Meanwhile, James May stands at the back holding their coats as they beat up the boy with the stutter.
