I'd say you're romaticising that, even beyond the now extinct Privy Council relationship. The monarchy didn't even send a representative for the funeral of our most trusted New Zealander. Though they do seem to have been rather fond of a barbeque or two since.

Agree. Hard to get worked up about this instance when there has been so much extravagant pork-barrelling in the last couple of years.

Perhaps Harawira is going for a byelection now as an early practical test of that agreement with the Maori Party not to campaign against one another? See if it extends to the flaxroots networks, etc.

Far better to have a parliamentary democracy in which ministers, including the prime minister, have to answer for their actions to the people's representatives on a daily basis.
That's not the opposite of a republic. Changing the nominal head of state doesn't have to mean going the US route. We could - and should - create something that reflects this nation's people and ways and histories.
