And I say “needs to be viewed” advisedly, because this is a film that every New Zealander ought to see. It has a very clear political agenda, and we ought to welcome that: there is no way to deal with this subject without taking a position on it, and a film which attempted to present itself as innocently objective would strike me as far more suspect than one which wears its heart on its sleeve. A two-hour film about three years in the life of a police case and the people it targeted simply cannot tell the full story; there isn’t time. The devil is in the things you choose to leave out. I’m much happier with the selection bias of the film-makers out in the open.

Speaking about lack of evidence, professional victim and metero-charlatan Ken Ring wails that he has been hounded out of business and into hiding.
The fear of prosecution for inciting a riot has also silenced him on earthquake predictions.
..."They said it was like calling out fire in a crowded theatre and that's against the law - it's called the Riot Act, and inciting riot," Ring said.
"My defence would be that the theatre is already on fire. All I'm doing is warning people of when and where the hottest spots will be.
"I've been virtually told by Dr Nick Smith and Sir Peter Gluckman that I'm not qualified to put statements out about earthquakes. They will have me legally if I do that.

A standard literary device for centuries - often easier for an audience to hear about their culture if the tale is painted as being about somewhere else.
1930s and 40s Europe taught a lot about extremes of human nature and Orwell was a talented observer and analyst of it. Like Shakespeare, that basic insightfulness resonates across time and cultures whether it's dressed up as a tale about kings in a far-flung land or about folk in a time that strangely resembles home.
