Hard News: Three months after, in reply to
Because I defy anyone who is still in Christchurch to say that it's not in the back of their mind every day, all day.
It's not. It's really, really not. But then, like Lilith, while I'm still frustrated, I see stuff change every day.

On the Sunday, I got the impression that many of the people there were actually locals -- we tend to forget that many Christchurch people still haven't seen their desolate city centre up close.
Oh yes. And I think the need to go and look is made stronger by feeling so much that we just don't know what's going on.

Yeah, I would not have let that happen. Also, all the people ever.

"get rid of those buses that don’t need to run through town, get rid of the underground bus station and we allow people to come back into town,”
Dear Ian. The buses run TO town. They bring people back into the town. PS Just stop talking now.
The current "two terminals on the edge of the CBD" system is appalling, and means that if I want to do anything but go directly east-west, it's just not worth the extra hour or so cocking about.

Character villas for everybody who wants them! Tumbledown turrets and tangled gardens optional!
Yeah, absolutely. When we were house-hunting, pretty much at the not-quite-bottom of the market, we could have afforded a place in Woolston or Avonside, just. Avonside still has quite a few Housing NZ properties in it, so those old villas by the river are never going to get ridiculously expensive.

Mainly because I hate massive subdivisions full of cookie-cutter houses and manicured lawns.
So, our kids now go to school out next to the Aidanfield subdivision. And it's fucking Stepfordy. In a tolerant mood, I tried to convince myself that it only looks so samey and artificial because it's new, and in twenty years when people have added their own individual touches to each house, it won't be so bad. But. Slightly tricky when there's nothing on the houses you could paint and each extends to about a metre from every boundary so there's no room for a tree.

Shulgin, I'm sure your apology and admission that you were completely wrong about David's property owning pressure group agenda is much appreciated, especially for the way you didn't just breeze on and pretend you didn't say it.
So may I ask David, why is your focus on the area you live, do you propose all rivers and streams in Chch be "sured-up"? If so, what is the cost? If there are not enough resources, how would one decide, for example to exclude the Heathcote over a "sure-up" of the Avon?
But here's my problem. What part of "remediation is cheaper than abandonment" are you having trouble with?

My call would be to encourage you all to drift south by making sure the infrastucture is there
And if you don't want too, next time it shakes tough luckWhat Lilith said re: the basic geography fail. Chch can "drift" south about as easily as it can drift east.
But also, yes, this is exactly what we need right now. People saying "do incredibly simple (actually quite difficult and wrong-headed) thing or next time there's an earthquake and your son gets crushed to death in a bus, it's your own fucking fault for being so stupid."

Although part of me regards the sheer breadth of Mr Haywood's skillset as bordering on the indecent.
Word. Man also plays a mean dulcimer.
And I'm darned if I want to live in Rolleston/Pegasus/Wigram
How to piss off people who live in Pegagus: ask them how they're liking Woodend. That is where they live. I don't know how obvious it is if you're not from Chch that when people talk about moving people out to Pegasus or Rolleston, that's not actually part of Christchurch. It's like moving you to Featherston (without the hills, obviously) and pretending you're still in Wellington. It isn't going to happen because, as David says, they're not going to move the infrastructure. And frankly if you moved Dallington or Aranui to Pegasus, there'd be a very well-mannered riot.
But yeah, there is an information vacuum, rumour's favourite thing. The stories we're hearing about our kids' school - which no-one has been allowed back in since the quake - are driving some parents to tears, and it's all speculation. (Though I'll admit I have speculated about the state of the sushi bar downstairs that no-one's had access to for three months.)

LOL.
