Oh COME ON! I was a teenage girl and I definitely dressed to make boys notice me. Why can’t we be honest about the fact that girls dress to attract the male gaze?

And sometimes they do. But they also dress for a whole bunch of other reasons, and also, as Danielle has said, that's completely fucking irrelevant. Last year my daughter grew 7cm. At that rate, yes, the $160 skirt you bought at the start of year 9 is going to be well above your knees by the end of year 10.

But if your short skirt is part of an Office Work Power Suit, that's also dressing for male attention? How about this skirt? Is that slutty?

This all reminds me of one of my favourite sites ever.

I just went through the Welsh section to make sure my daughter's name wasn't there.

Also: Brian Edwards explains himself further:

I could have told my 14-year-old daughter that she shouldn’t go out to a dance half-naked because guys would think she looked like a streetwalker and treat her accordingly. I was her father and we were very close and I worried about what might happen to her.

No question she failed but equally setting her up as an example of teacher bullying is also a failure of fairness.

My point is that slut-shaming (in the general) is as much bullying as physical violence is. Ergo, one incidence of verbal abuse is the same as one punch: quite possibly simply a loss of control on a bad day, to be understood but not excused. My problem is more, yes, the attitude in the follow-up pieces, that being a 'slut' is something so terrible that it's worth making a teenager miserable to keep her off that terrible destructive path.

I have enormous respect for teachers, and sympathy for the ones who've had to deal with both myself and my daughter. I still recognise, though, that there are some few bad teachers, and sometimes those people are found in quite senior positions. I do find it worse that this woman was a Dean, and not a junior teacher.

Nothing else important to chatter about?

If you look really carefully, you'll find other threads, with other stuff on them. Go to it.

These parents seem unusual in that they seem entirely happy with their 14 year old's attitudes and behaviour

In the initial article on this, Amethyst's mother openly acknowledged that there were problems with her behaviour. On this issue, however, her parents have been unconditionally supportive of her. Which might just increase their chances of getting through to her on an issue which is actually important. Because yes, uniform? Really really isn't.

    Wow - that was quick!

Most schools have trousers as an alternative uniform for girls. I'm talking about getting rid of the skirt completely and forcing the all girls to wear trousers all the time. Seeing as the skirts are the problem.

Tangential relevance: why is Brian Edwards so bad at arguing on the internet?

This and his hideous column on Nayan Woods' death would seem to indicate that he's reached a level of curmudgeonliness where he genuinely hates young people.

  • Hard News: Do you like what we've done…, in reply to Kyle Matthews,

The "last post by" is still there, in small print under the name of the thread, and it's a link to the last comment.

But yes, I do miss system page navigation at both top and bottom of pages.

    Emma’s rack is even bigger!

    It's this dress.

But yes, slightly bigger gravatars, nice.

This attractively serifed font makes me feel as though all of my postings should be Very Significant. Must try harder.

Oh, the temptation to come back with Comic Sans, just for a couple of hours...

  • The end of the road West,

I found the debate over the death of Ianto quite interesting.

I cannot understand how anyone can consider Ianto's death to be homophobia without the balance of their mind being seriously disturbed.
