  • Hard News: Unreasonable people vote,

most of my American relatives and in-laws aren't even on the same planet with me politically

I had this experience today when a friend of mine who lives in Oklahoma (and actually has some quite strong views on things like indigenous rights and immigration) said:

I don't vote. I don't have [anything] against anyone who does vote because hey! Someone has to vote.

About one thing, we do agree. She shouldn't vote.

  • Speaker: My People,

"Oh no, it's not you we are talking about, it's those other DPB mums." Uh yeah, and who are they exactly?

Yeah, I used to get this when I was on an Invalids' Benefit. Which, not co-incidentally, was when my children were at kindergarten. My partner wasn't working because I couldn't look after the children.

Thanks, Jackie, this is a lovely, loving piece.

  • Hard News: Unreasonable people vote,

You didn't just... tell a woman to 'calm down'... in a discussion about feminism, did you?

    Heheheh.

    a discussion about me

If this keeps up, I'm going to snorfle coffee.

  • Hard News: Unreasonable people vote,

I was just thinking this morning that if I were a chick, I'd totally want Rachel Maddow to do me.

Just after I watched that Rachel Maddow clip, I went to Twitter and it suggested I follow her. And I thought, that's not so much following as stalking. Because yes. Omnomnomnom.

Not wanting to turn the sound down being part of the attraction, of course.

  • Hard News: A few (more) words on The Hobbit,

Cult books have a short shelf life. Tolkien had done his dash by 1972 and I can't recall much discussion of his books for the next 30 years.

So... given LOTR was published in 1954, a short shelf life is around twenty years? Even if that were true, which it isn't? (I, like my peers, by which I mean now-30-something geeks, read it in the 80s.) It's sold over 150 million copies.

I couldn't recognise anything of this country in the digitally doctored scenery

It's true, the Sky Tower didn't appear. So he wouldn't.

And yet, I'm not a big fan of the books. Witness the beginning, and large portions of the middle, of this discussion. Roughan sounds like he just doesn't like speculative fiction, "childish" being one of the main criticisms of that school of thought. But if even geeks are happy to have a go at the quality of both the books and the movies, perhaps someone has been making himself a wee straw man, just in time for Guy Fawkes.

  • Up Front: Oh, Cock!,

Much as getting into, out of, and around Hagley Park today did sound like a complete fracking nightmare, I did briefly consider it. I've never legally seen the Exponents...

    SRSLY? Aidan Turner? Aidan Turner?

    I'm... embarrasing myself.

Shall we talk about the scourge of New Zealanders not rinsing the dishes before leaving them to dry?

Shall we talk about my American friend who likes to keep the insides of her coffee cups nice and white by bleaching them?

I can't imagine having a young mum. I think whatever I learnt from my mum I learnt because of her years (42 years older). The fact that she came from such a different time - born in the 20s.

Me too - Mum was born in 1928, and in her mid-forties when I was born. Though she was always extraordinarily active and vital when I was living at home, so I don't think I ever really thought of her as old. I'm still working on that now.
