Given this, and what else I threw out, the next thing we can expect is an invasion of eleventh-century Norman knights bent on reclaiming the Holy Land.
Lucy? I love you.
Have just been to the supermarket. Bought sparkling wine and steak. Going to take some time to celebrate our good fortune as a family, yes we are. While trying really hard not to feel guilty about all those worse off than we, some of whom we know and love.
There has been a really strong urge to gather and socialise with other people. Last couple of nights have been very giggly. (A friend of ours was trapped briefly under his tallboy. Turns out none of the kids knows what a 'tallboy' is, so some interesting and not all that improbable assumptions had been made.)

The story put about yesterday by the Herald that Jim Anderton declared on CTV on Friday that it would take "an earthquake" for Bob Parker to win the mayoral election is SIMPLY WRONG.
I am, and I don't quite understand why, absolutely fucking FURIOUS to hear that. We're still having significant aftershocks and the Herald is treating this like some kind of media point-scoring game.
Huh, and I thought you were a West Chch girl, Emma! Don't know why I thought that, must have made it up
I was, until March, when we moved to Bromley. We could afford a nice, and apparently very sound, house, and I just love it over here.

ETA: CCC has link up now it seems.
That's about right for my experience of council information flow. It's information people need, useful, and up pretty quickly, but the time on that is still an hour after the trucks came round here this morning.

We have all been fielding worried calls, texts and emails from all over the world, which is lovely of course, but also slightly confusing! I keep wondering if I just haven't noticed how bad things are.
One of the great strengths of Twitter and Facebook is that you get to hear from a range of voices, which gives some perspective. TV and newspapers focus on the worst-affected places, and their viewers and readers assume what they are seeing is representative: it isn't.
This. Also, Lilith, you live quite close to us, I think.
The evolving use of Twitter by Chch people through this I find fascinating. First we just wanted to hear from people, we needed to have contact with them even after we knew no-one was dead.
Since then, it's been about gathering and distribuing information. We're not so much interested in citizen journalism as in managing to find out (not an easy task yesterday afternoon) that the schools would be closed, and then passing that information on down chains we know we can rely on. Facebook a little, but it's too slow. Twitter.
So this morning, as interesting and contradictory of what they've been seeing people might find the information, I'm letting people know we had our rubbish collected so that people whose rubbish day is Tuesday know to put their bins out. Yesterday there was nothing on the (generally good, but sometimes slow and erratic) CCC website about it.

Seriously, does any Christchurch PASer not have a damaged chimney?
Me. Seriously, we have no damage at all. The rubbish trucks came round this morning just as they usually would. What you're seeing on TV is the absolute worst. There are a few suburbs like ours where you could walk around and see no sign it had happened. We don't have to go far, just down to the old brick buildings on Ferry Road, but still. If we hadn't been able to help out I'd have something akin to survivor guilt.

Have just heard from someone who works there that the Canterbury Museum is in pretty good shape, considering. But the old Robert McDougall art gallery out the back had no earthquake strengthening...
-
It is tedious though.
yeah, i was trying to work out how to explain this. Even for the nervier people I know, it seems they're losing the reflex to panic with all the aftershocks, but it's still... wearing.
Actually, it's like being nagged by a toddler.

Exponents,
Christchurch
In Cashel Street I... oh holy fuck!Art, again, Joe Wylie.

I actually can't imagine what it would be like experiencing nearly 60 separate aftershocks since the main quake.
It's not making sleeping very easy. But basically I've stopped bothering reacting for anything less than a five.

I guess they all text like mad anyway
Son's phone went off before the first aftershock.
