Alright, and if I were to purchase sex how do I go about ascertaining that the person I'm buying from is one of these free-choice prostitutes. As opposed to some Lilya 4-ever slave?

Here, I'd start with the Prostitutes Collective. Ask them who the good employers are. Alternately, find a small 'collective' brothel, you know, one of those terrible suburban brothels where three or four women work together out of the same house.

Talk to the woman. Does she seem happy, petrified, miserable, bored? Is anyone getting very loomy because you're talking to her?

You may be almost 100% sure, but you are 100% wrong.

Perfectly prepared to accept that. The three other people I asked had the same feeling I did, that things had been changed, but it wasn't anything we could put a finger on. So to speak.

Maybe there really are prostitutes that have other options, but choose this line of work instead.

Not maybe, Martin. There ARE. That's as inarguable as there being people in sex work who are there because they have no other options. But my Favourite Sex Worker has two degrees and a decently-earning spouse. Well-educated articulate sex-workers aren't exactly hard to find on the net.

For an interesting perspective on 'options', try this read from Jill Brennerman.

My journey into and out of sex work is unique. My first experience in sex work lasted 3 years. I was (literally) a sex slave: no safe words were needed, and I didn’t even know safe words existed. I was coerced.

10 years after I was trafficked, I returned to sex work as a stripper. While I worked occasionally at clubs, I mostly did outcall bachelor’s parties. The agent got 40 percent, I got 60 percent. That’s 60 percent more than when I was a sex trafficking victim.

Later still, I gave up on stripping and went to work on my own as an independent escort. I was my own boss and there were no comparable problems. No one hurt me, I set my own boundaries, I got paid what I asked for—all 100 percent of it.

While it wasn’t the greatest job in the world, it was work; it was nothing like my coerced experience. Anti-trafficking activists like Donna M. Hughes, anti-pornography activists like Gail Dines and Shelly Lubben, anti-prostitution activists like Melissa Farley willfully ignore this fact: there is a world of difference between being a sex trafficking victim and being a sex worker.

  • Up Front: Eat Up Your Brothelly,

It sounds like a lot more fun (for them) than guys seem to have in brothels, by accounts.

Okay, so I started this whole thing to try to deal with an icky generalisation, and now I think I'm going to make one. Everything in the sex industry seems to be different, tonally, atmospherically, when women organise it for women. The 'going to the toilet' analogy might be a good one: men go alone, don't speak, don't make eye contact. Women go in groups, chat, make it a social occasion. (Not, I have to say, women in groups I go out drinking with. I've never done this, find it really uncomfortable, but it does happen because I've had to endure sharing space with these groups.)

When women go to strip shows it's not alone, lurking in a corner in a trench-coat, it's in big noisy groups. Women go to lingerie parties and sex toy parties. Now, I'm pretty sure we've got a fairly liberal, open-minded group here and that it would contain a few men who could manage handling sex toys and discussing sexual practices with their friends, but am I completely out of line in thinking this kind of social behaviour is more common with women?

So maybe that's the key to making this work: to make it social. Make it somewhere women will go as a group, out of curiosity or whatever, and see how long before they're all, "Go on, Esme, gwooooon! Get some in ya!"

I'm... not sure how this would gel with the Pammy's idea of giving the men deportment lessons and shit. They probably have something altogether more refined and discreet in mind.

I... have informed the relevant professionals about Haywood's Windows fetish.

    Brilliant.

Leigh also developed a taste for sex with anonymous younger men whom she picked up at Scotty's Garage, which had one petrol pump for legal reasons and up to 22 male attendants.

So... many... filthy... puns. "Fill her up?"

So she either anticipates a lot of custom, or to charge like a wounded bull.

$240/hour. Which is considerably less than Shady Lady charges, but I assume that's the base rate and there would be "extras".

People who strip for crowds and people who fuck for money are not the same people, on the whole.

They are at The White House, I believe, and Ren was perfectly happy in her outcall stripping days to escalate to sex for money.

  • Up Front: Eat Up Your Brothelly,

I expect most women have virtually no idea what I'm talking about and imagine that a brothel resembles a strip club, somewhere you can have a big party and a laugh

Ben, the Listener article contains some description from Corkery of what she wants the venue to be like - "a six-star address [featuring] a bar, a spa and up to 28 rooms". "Every man in the establishment will be fore sale, apart from the bar staff... So even if you go to the bar, that man who is dancing with you, at your table, will be wanting to get you in the scratcher..."

So, not a 'seedy little room'. Nor is the Nevada brothel I mentioned anything like that - it really is the ranch-style "cat-house" people imagine a brothel to be.

Jackie: what I was thinking about was the time that I'd had a particularly bad night, was very upset, needed to feel better about myself, and so had sex with someone stupid. I'm thinking a sex worker would have been cleaner and simpler and morally much the same.

Also. Men paying women for sex = degrading to women. However, women paying men for sex = degrading to women. Wuh?

Craig Y: yeah, women have been writing and reading about gay men having sex for at least forty years. It's nice to see mainstream publishers catching on. I've also had a couple of goes at trying to get an interview with the guys who run Syzygy - a print magazine featuring pictorial stories of gay erotica, aimed at women.

I should note, for what it's worth, that this column suffers slightly from having had some difficult last-minute changes made to it because of what I am almost 100% sure has been some heavy toning-down of the Pundit column. I could be wrong, but it doesn't appear to be today what I read yesterday.

Yeah, it's not actually usually considered appropriate to shoot workplace bullies in the face.
