Umm, little bit afraid now. Thank goodness Emma and Megan aren't here too.

Oh, I'm here. I'm just... watching. Don't let me stop you.

my head is currently overflowing with comments I want to make about something Emma said 2 pages ago.

    Karl-pooling?

  • Southerly: Confessions of a Social Retard,

Note to Emma: apparently you just keep talking till you're the last two standing.

Matthew and I left two hours after everyone else... Which brings me to something I am recently learning to find awkward, and the topic of that column I haven't written. Apparently, that whole 'men and women can't be friends' thing isn't just a myth invented by When Harry Met Sally, people really find it so. Another blog and comment thread that makes me feel like a visitor from another planet.

So... suddenly I am paranoid. Maybe I'm constantly upsetting people. Maybe sex is an obstructive issue in all my close male friendships and I just haven't noticed.

  • Southerly: Confessions of a Social Retard,

They make good props for hands that don't know what to do. I think it's the main reason for the popularity of smoking too. You can always hit someone up for a light, give them a cig, opt to decamp outside with someone, etc.

Not the 'main reason', I don't think, but smoking does work really well as a social prop. Even more so now that people have to go outside, so you get pushed together with people you might not otherwise have met, with something to talk about. I had a striking conversation at Chch airport with a complete stranger who, it turned out, had just lost her father, and who obviously needed somebody to talk to, and a light.

    She wontoned you David

Ha! I don't think so. Not unless she was one of those strange 19-year-olds who are into 16-year-olds who look 14.

No, seriously, that was my first thought on reading that too, that she fancied you.

Also, thinking about it, I realize that I've probably inflicted boring engineering conversations on you, too. And Emma Hart as well.

No, seriously. I see you catch yourself thinking you're boring me, and you're really seriously not.

One of the things I struggle with (really shy, and I've learned most of the rules of social interaction by observation rather than instinct) is what to do when you're in a group of about half a dozen, and two of you mutually find something incredibly fascinating that's obviously boring the crap out of everyone else. I mean, when Matthew and I started talking about Cubist Literature at the Dux that time, I actually saw other people's eyes glaze over.

And I think I can safely say now that this column of David's means the one I was agonising over placing correctly will appear in Metro, because it's too close to this.

  • Southerly: Confessions of a Social Retard,

I did greet David with a man-hug once. He was a little taken aback, but coped, well, manfully. Although I'll grant you that being clasped to a very matronly bosom is a whole 'nother level...

I find it helps if one explains the rules clearly to David first. So, "Russell says I must give you a hug from him. So I'm afraid we're going to have to hug. Bear up, dear."

Emma was next to you with a thought bubble over her head in which I could almost see "He stood there, chiseled and manly. When would he turn to me? I quivered with anticipation".

I'm curious now, Ben, which way was I facing?

Just so there's no confusion, this is most definitely not a thinly-veiled reference to Emma Hart (who could only be described as a professional erotica writer, of course).

I did eventually work out this wasn't me. I do do it for love, though. And my partner takes a polite interest in my work.

I suspect occasional silences would be good. Any advice?

I don't think I've seen anyone have time for silence.

  • Hard News: My Mum and other good things,

I have that problem with Lucy - it is reasonably uncommon among my own generation (with the peculiar exception of my year at college) but extremely popular among the under-tens.

I get this with generational differences, what I can't grok is the weird geographical differences I've run across. So when I was growing up in Timaru, there were lots of Emmas, which made sense because of The Avengers. But when I moved to Chch, no Emmas, but every second guy was called K/Carl. To the point where we discussed the idea of Karl-pooling. You go to a party, drop your Karl off in a room, and when it's time to leave, you just pick up the first Karl you run across. Drop your Karl-keys in a bowl, etc. Never met a C/Karl in Timaru.

Lots of Sharons down there. Y'know, this could be a class thing...

  • Hard News: My Mum and other good things,

This place has become a somewhat self regarding clique, vis the treatment handed out to a new poster who mistook the terms Public Address and Hard News for a public forum and got thoroughly slapped down for not knowing the unwritten conventions and that this was a private forum.

Peter, in both this thread and the CFS one, you were told to pull your head in because you were upsetting people. it was written in actual words and everything. Politeness is not actually a convention that Public Address invented.

In both this thread and the CFS one, you were given information that seemed to prove your position wrong - medically and scientifically. In both of these threads you were asked, directly, to address that information. In both those threads, you ignored those requests. In light of this, your insistence that you are bringing information we simply don't want to hear looks... interesting.

Two words you have used that DO seem relevant to my experience of listening to you: 'message', and 'religious'.

    It's getting a bit much.

In that, somewhere, Arthur Lydiard is thinking, "Geez, that guy bangs on about running a bit much."

  • Hard News: My Mum and other good things,

I also told them about Mum. From childhood, my mother has faced a series of challenges. She has lost loved ones in such terrible ways; she had to find such courage in my Dad's last years. I think some people might have become bitter through all that, but she never has. She has always maintained her good and loving soul. I think that I consciously seek and value in others the lack of malice she has always showed.

We have the same Mum. Spooky.
