that's not the same thing though is it?
It's not the same thing, and in fact if you read the link, Mark, you'll see that's exactly the situation that the de facto couple who brought the case didn't think was good enough.

Emma - so you with your formal, written down in the record books civil union can't adopt while we, who are living in sin because we're too slack to formalise anything, might be able to if we ask really nicely? That's ludicrous!
Why yes, it is. But the alternative was to legalise gay adoption. So, better some straight collatoral damage than that. (It is so absurd that I can't believe it would stand up to testing, and the entire Adoption Act needs rewriting.)
I thought she was saying that she was with a woman as a partner, and I was all 'gosh, that's sudden! Wonder what happened there?'
I... really don't think that could happen without you guys knowing about it.

But yay for wiping that obnoxious law off the books, may it stay off and may the other states quickly have to remove their equivalent laws.
Yeah, nothing's going to happen quickly, because everyone knows this is going straight back to court in California. And of course people have only just got started screaming about 'activist judges over-throwing democracy', they have to let off some steam.
Meanwhile, here at home, my partner and I can't legally adopt.

Just that it's the kind of logical, evidence-based, rule of law respecting conservatism the Tea Baggers despise
And the burden of proof is where it should be. He's demanding that Prop 8 supporters come up with some evidence to justify unequal treatment in law, not demanding that gay people prove they should have equal rights. That makes it extremely difficult to counter, as there is no evidence to support that position.

You all should go (not just because my daughter has a role as Peachblossom!)
Ha, I was Peaseblossom in Dream! (This should in no way be taken to imply anything.)

Also, how come Family First are suddenly big on feminism?
Maybe because she's the sort of feminist who thinks abortion causes breast cancer. Maybe because her talk will be based on this kind of non-evidence.

wouldn't electric opening doors be pretty much non-existant?
The doors use the kinetic energy of their own motion to charge themselves up for the next time they have to open.
But yes, what Ben said.

You're probably being cryptic back, but just in case... it's a phrase that was spoken during Gauntlet. I'm quite fond of it because it's one of only two English phrases outside of music lyrics that allows me to remember what it was like not to speak English. I didn't back then, so it was like a string of sounds, but casting my mind back to it now I can recall the experience of not being able to decode it - and it's not a memory I can manufacture otherwise.
That, my man, is incredibly geekily cool. (We use the phrase "Elf needs food badly" as a substitute for "I'm hungry" in this house, and the echo-response is the often-heard "Wizard is about to die".)

between "escort" and "mum".
TV3 news used the word 'escort' four times in one of their items on her. I counted. Are there any other occupations that become the identifier like that?

The Press letters column continues to be polarised on the Middleton Grunge sacking event...
For the last couple of weeks, we've been sporadically having somebody else's Press delivered to our front lawn. So I sort of accidentally read the Letters section.
What I find wearing is the people saying, "What was he expecting, going to work at a Christian school?" ie he was asking for it, really. As if he had deliberately chosen Middleton Grange from the wide range of employment options for professional high-school netball coaches. (This I find very difficult to get my head around in itself. What kind of school has more than one paid netball coach?)
But nothing made me as furious as the teaser TV3 used for the research story, which was "Does something nasty make you gay?" Whoever wrote that and thought it was okay needs to go sit in the corner of Urge and think about what they've done.
