Articulated. Absolutely. I remember that about you.

The way you articulated at uni did make you very persuasive.

Um. That's true. I blame the yoga. Also, shut up.

  • Up Front: A Word in Your Ear,

That second question is key because I need to know if I have to explain what a gene is (which I can do and which most folks think they understand but probably don't really) or if I need to describe how breeding really works (as opposed to how 5th form science says it works).

Ahhhh... one of the most painful Cliff Notes style articles I ever did for Bardic Web was trying to explain basic genetics and evolution, at about a 4th form level, to people I had to assume had very little if any science education, but nonetheless thought they knew what a gene was or how interbreeding worked. Sometimes I would fantasise about increasingly violent ways of getting people to stop saying 'blood' when they mean 'genes'. (That's not really what they mean, but again, too complicated.)

I still don't think I did a very good job on it, because there's so much "well, okay, that's not really true, but let's assume it is so you can get the basic underlying idea". Why? Because someone has to sit down and try to explain to people why you can't interbreed pixies and dragons. I wish I was making that example up. I'm not.

  • Radiation: Geek, annoyed,

Now with this announcement , put me down as geek, intrigued (and cautiously optimistic):

Oo! If this is, as it appears, instead of Russell T writing a separate American version of the show, that in itself gives it a big head start in the optimism stakes.

An Emperor of a republic is a non sequitur - it is illogical.

And that'd never happen in real life. I mean, where are you going to find a one-party dictatorship with hereditary leadership called The People's Democratic Republic of something?

  • Up Front: A Word in Your Ear,

The time I made my Income Support caseworker get the book off the shelf and look up the law that stated that I was eligible for the dole is a tremendous example of this sort of privilege in action.

It was a doctor in my case. A doctor at Student Health, but still a doctor.

In any disagreement with a public agency, you will be better served if you are articulate, literate and persuasive.

Oh yes. I mean, you'll get so far on sheer 'squeaky wheel' just refusing to shut up and go away, but still...

what you actually needed was a man to repeat what you just said to make it worth listening to

My bosses were female, but in one case this was still true.

Fongers gets to get rid of Lhaws, whether they wanted to or not.

Here's a wee game. Compare the Herald headline with the Stuff one. Spot the difference?

The irony there, of course, is that it has long been said that conservative Republicans are secretly keener consumers of porn than their dirty liberal foes.

There was a quite amusing study a couple of years ago of pay-per-view porn usage in airport hotels in different states. You know, the kind of places used by local business people because they have a 5am interstate flight the next morning and don't want to have to drive for an hour or two beforehand and then pay for parking.

By far the state with the highest usage of porn in those circumstances was Utah.

  • Cracker: That's Not My Name,

I missed Haden's actual comments - did he say that a rugby team does better without so many "darkies", or did he say that the Crusaders specifically limit the number they have?

As I understood it, both. That the reason the Crusaders do so well is that they limit the number of Polynesian players they'll have.

I was going to suggest that they have an 'anti-stupid' quota, but... Justin Marshall.

  • Cracker: That's Not My Name,

So I guess it's actually a quota on Polynesian players who are also stupid.

That particular dodge might allow Haden to actually be right, and not completely contravening reality. Because so far, even with his two back-down positions ('of course I didn't mean it was actually written down when I said it was written down' and 'when I said darkies I didn't mean Maori') he still doesn't appear to know what he's talking about. So I'm sure there's some reason all those other Pacific Island players don't count that we'll hear about shortly.

In Haden's... defence? I'm quite sure somebody told him this, one night, in a bar, after a few beers, and I'm sure he believes it. It's the part where he saw nothing wrong with repeating it in public with no verification at all that should reflect on his suitability as an ambassador.

Not that I want to defend "hung a ginga day" but wouldn't " hug a blond/brown-haired person" be more equivalent? Coconut and kike being ethnic slurs. Ginga/blond not so much.

No, that would be "hug a red-head day". Ginga's not the same as kike, no, but it's not the same as blond, either.

Also, as I've mentioned here before but now can't remember where I read it, 'ginga-baiting' has its roots in actual discrimination against the Irish.
