  • Hard News: Climate science and the media,

You claim that the world is yellow; however I can see it isn't, so you have jaundice, so your data is wrong. Look! my ideology trumps your data!

Wow, you're so clever. Or, in a discussion about science, when I say "data" I mean "properly-gathered scientific data subject to peer review"?

  • Hard News: Climate science and the media,

Bart is giving me a complex...

so passionately hold onto incorrect beliefs that allow them to remain in their comfort zone

This is where I have a problem with pretty much any ideology (and where I think I differentiate 'ideology' from belief or opinion): at the point where someone's response is, "Your data conflicts with my ideology, therefore your data must be wrong."

Foo Camp on science in schools and evidence-based policy making was both inspiring and really depressing.

  • Up Front: Time for an Intervention,

And you could type this without laughing?

It's an art. Also, no-one can see me.

So draining your region's water table now to irrigate farms is part of a long-term cunning plan. Genius.

It's part of the John Key hydrology engineering plan. If you don't use water, it goes out to sea and gets wasted. So it stands to reason, if you can get that water to come back from the sea, you can use it. Otherwise Bastard Nature is just getting a free ride again. Sorry, Lake Ellesmere, the dream is over.

  • Up Front: Time for an Intervention,

PS: Don't forget you're a drained swamp, we can take that great leap backwards.

See, this is why we're not worried about rising sea levels. All that water'll just go where that water used to be. Simple.

  • Hard News: Climate science and the media,

the public now think science isn't anything important.

I have this rant some of you may have been subjected to about the importance of scientific literacy. I know it's no longer a "core competancy", but understanding the very basics of science is really important to, y'know, living. Daylight saving doesn't fade your curtains. Most cleaners are basic, hard water film is basic, you need to clean it with an acid. How the water cycle works. Wouldn't it be nice to have a Prime Minister who understands the water cycle?

I don't know if it's universal, I only have two kids, but most of the questions little kids ask are science questions. And my two are still going - just last night I was trying to explain to my daughter why the Earth has magnetic poles and the Moon doesn't. Somewhere along the line, "Why is the sky blue?" is turning into "Pff, well you can't believe what scientists say."

    Amerkin, then?

I do not wish to foster any unkind stereotypes. But yes.

Do you really mean to deny the divine intervention that self-evidentally saved your wretched skin?

So, I used to have this... person I was forced to interact with regularly, who was interesting. She told this story about the time she was woken by their lights flickering on and off. Thought it was one of their kids acting up. It stopped, then started again, and her husband got up to catch the offender. Nobody there, but he noticed a funny smell, went round the corner, and discovered that their fuse box was pretty much melting into a pile of slag.

It was of course, a miracle. Because you see God had made their lights flicker, to warn them that they were in terrible danger from their electrics. There is, after all, no other possible explanation.

  • Hard News: Misadventure and Muppetry,

I do sometime feel that there are a lot of sick people who need to harden up a bit.

That's brilliant! So insightful! Wait here while I get John Kirwan!

To stay on the Invalid's Benefit when you're not sick requires the connivance of two doctors, one of whom is employed by WINZ. But we'll defer to your medical expertise, shall we?

What I'd like to see is some kind of agreement that, if there is a box on the form for a doctor to tick if the patient is not expected to survive for the term of the benefit renewal, you leave those people the hell alone.

  • Up Front: You Never Forget Your First,

So what began as a childhood fascination with a television programme has now become my job.

Nice. You'll understand I'm sure Paul if some of us kind hate you just the littlest bit. :)

  • Up Front: You Never Forget Your First,

Reminds me too strongly of Anita McNaught,

    Yes indeed.

    I'm afraid.

    Wait, what?

Please forgive if already posted but free Dr Who game downloads were worthy of mentioning I think.

Tim, you have made my daughter's day. Well, in a sort of "now desperately hanging out for June" kind of of way.
