I hardened up on Sapphire & Steel

Okay, yeah, THAT was some scary, scary shit. That's the theme music that makes me feel kind of sick.

Geek trivia moment: Peter Hammond, who wrote S&S, also wrote a couple of episodes of Torchwood, including the one with the carnies coming out of the silent films and stealing people's breath.

  • Up Front: You Never Forget Your First,

Much as it sounds like I'm a self-hating geek, there's going to be a clot of Whovians bitching about absolutely everything.

Uh-huh. While I try to totally avoid that kind of thing, I've seen a couple of people complain that Matt Smith is "doing Tennant". To which my response has been "wait, that's not what they mean" followed by "bwa?"

My daughter rewatched Rose yesterday, the first episode of the new Who, so in the interests of research I joined her. Rose saves the Doctor's life. Right from the outset this is going to be a more balanced relationship.

Also, I remembered the point at which I thought "Yes, I am On Board With This". Mickey gets eaten by a wheelie bin. Which burps. It was all "wow they've got a budget now", but still with the traditional cheese we'd come to know and love.

he'd start screaming and demand the folks buy a couch for him to hide behind.

    Couch WIN, I believe.

"Don't mention that man, he stole my James..." :-)

Use it or lose it, surely. Also, dressing Billy Idol like Adam Ant? Full of win.

  • Up Front: You Never Forget Your First,

(BTW, anyone know who has the New Zealand rights to 'Being Human' and if we're ever going to see it?)

Prime, I believe, so I hope so. Because if it's not "soon" I'm going to have to burn off a bunch more bandwidth. There's a show whose outline sounds utterly naff (so, like, there's a ghost and a vampire and a werewolf, and they all flat together...) which is brilliant, if you can just persuade people to watch it.

I think the Russell Tovey thing went through creepy and out into endearing. About when the best thing Davies could think of to cheer up Captain Jack was to give him Midshipman Frame.

  • Up Front: You Never Forget Your First,

Am I the only person who kind of likes Rose then?

No. I know lots of people hate her. I also know someone who hated The Girl in the Fireplace, because she loved Rose so much. (Again, Sophia Myles's breasts. What's not to love?)

There wasn't one of the modern companions I actually disliked. I felt sorry for poor Martha, she just got totally shafted. She could have been interesting, but she just got to be Rose Again.

And like Grace said, now they've all got families. Clearly we're going that way with Amy too, because we're going to see that bunch of anciliary characters again. (Re the Buffy thing, there's a lovely wee bit in The Writer's Tale where Russell Davies is having dinner with Kylie Minogue and James Marsters, and can't get over how James is even hotter in real life. Bless.)

but the character was so whiny and annoying it made me wish Nissa, Tegan and Adric came back, heck maybe even Turlough

Wait a minute, what the hell was wrong with Nyssa?

I liked Donna too - stroppy, redhead, think we're done, really. And I was even more impressed after seeing Catherine Tate on Never Mind the Buzzcocks and wanting to kill her quite, quite dead.

and don't anyone even dare mention Captain Jack

Right, I'll head off back to Twitter then...

Robyn? Does "Clean Peter Davison opening" mean that somewhere there is a Dirty Peter Davison opening?

Wow. That actually came out even worse than it sounded in my head.

Ian: yes, we are all naughty people with Friends in England. But Prime is promising it "soon", which is excellent.

Weeping Angels? The fear factor doesn't seem to have diminished. Have to move the couch out from the wall.

"Blink" is the only thing I can remember having scared me that much as an adult. At that stage, we were still vetting them before showing them to the children, and they saw that one during the day with the curtains open, rather than in the dark right before bed. This may be the reason my daughter found "Silence in the Library" scarier.

You can figure out what screened when here.

Wow, thanks Philip. Once again, the obsessives of the internet come in well handy. I can now work out pretty much exactly when I started watching. That's kind of scary.

  • Up Front: You Never Forget Your First,

People around my age or even a bit younger are telling me that Pertwee was their first. If my memory is in any way reliable, I saw Baker, then at some point Dr Who went back to being in black and white, and there was Pertwee. So either they saw him the first time around and I only came in later, or I came in earlier.

I am still enormously fond of him.

Every time Rhiana goes back and watches some of the first series, I remember how good Ecclestone was. And in between, I always forget again. He did the (IMO essential) menacing aspect very well, while still managing the Manic Smartarse.

    Also, your link needs fixing.

I was just doing that. Thanks.

I'd seen Neil Gaiman Tweet that, but it was kind of interesting to see how people who'd never seen any Dr Who before reacted. Everyone else is SO focused on what went before.
