  • Hard News: Standards Matter,

It doesn't matter whether the school had a better intake; all that matters is the results.

And of course, those results are all obtained honestly:

A more disturbing incident was related to me by a member of the First Fifteen. He'd intended to leave school after fifth form, but was persuaded to stay by assurances that he'd be "looked after". At the end of sixth form, he was accredited his university entrance qualifications without having to sit the exams. This was quite astonishing, he claimed, as he'd barely submitted any academic work during the whole year.

    ...

If you had two schools nearby and one was 20 places further up a league table, wouldn't you want your child going there? Better average grades mean smarter kids.

For many parents, there's a lot more to a school than grades. What if the higher-ranked school has an endemic bullying problem? Or the lower-ranked school has a better involvement with their community, a broader range of cultures, a sensational kapa haka group, is more open to dealing with the needs of disabled children?

  • Hard News: Standards Matter,

I can't really argue with that, but for future reference could the NZEI please stop using children as campaign props in their media 'roadshow"?

Okay, but only as long as any time Tolley or Key says "Parents want" (parents tell us, parents think, etc) a pixie comes and kicks them in the bottom.

All teh talk so far has been about identification, there has been no mention of assistance to schools to raise their scores, no mention of increased funding to bring all children up to the required level, no mention of any extra money in the education system at all apart from the funding already announced to "support and publicise".

This. This this this. I could bore you all with a long, hateful rant about the way my daughter - clearly already identified as being 'in need' - started high school last week with no assistance from the MoE at all, despite being promised both a facilitator and an itinerant, but you don't want to hear it, and I don't want the headache from crying again.

Uh, couldn't "objectionable films" involve underage models?

Back to Somebody Think of the Children:

What’s an objectionable film in Victoria?

Well that probably comes down to individual opinion more than anything, but the Act defines it as one that:

    1. describes, depicts, expresses or otherwise deals with matters of sex, drug misuse or addiction, crime, cruelty, violence or revolting or abhorrent phenomena in a manner that is likely to cause offence to a reasonable adult; or
    2. promotes, incites or instructs in matters of crime or violence; or
    3. is classified RC or X 18+ or would, if classified, be classified RC or
X 18+ or has been, or would be, refused approval, as the case requires

There were also allegations that a model had been 17 when she posed for them, but that was a separate issue. See point #4 here:

However, in December 2009 Hall was charged with 54 counts of making objectionable films ... The Herald Sun also reports he has been charged with child pornography offences after police ’seized footage of allegedly illegal sex acts’.

Ironically, Australia remains the base of the highy successful Abby Winters (SFW, it's the Wikipedia article), which specialises in young amateur models.

Abby Winters was raided last year, and not for the first time. (Contrary to initial reports, no-one was actually charged, and no equipment seized.) They are subject to intense police scrutiny and I'd be very surprised if they'd be dumb enough to risk their business by knowingly having an underage model on their site. Oz doesn't have the intense 2257 system they do in the States, where proof of age is demanded for every performer for every shoot they do.

the Aussie censor now appears to require porn stars to have large breasts

More here: the ACB's response to the original story, and Fiona Patten's response to that response.

“All the publications that have been refused classification adhere to the very strict US laws that enforce model age verification in adult publications and films. These laws are upheld by the FBI. There is no chance that any of the models were under 18.”

In the 80s it was... Dobermanns...?

Dobermanns. (Dobermenn?) You remember Zeus and Apollo from Magnum PI, right Danielle? I know you do...

  • Up Front: All Together Now,

Angus, I just realised that any reply I could make here would involve something I said back on page 3.

Given that circularity, I'm pretty sure I'm done. Your comments about me can be read in the light of your other comments on this thread, and previous ones, and I'm confident in whom they reflect on the most.

  • Up Front: All Together Now,

In answer to your argument, a step I jumped earlier, i hope this answers all your questions:

No Angus, in fact that spiel, while yet again repeating what you've said before, doesn't answer any of the questions you've been asked.

It also doesn't address the fact that you've twice asserted that people should be obliged to mention things they don't remember, a position which makes, let's be clear, no sense at all.

This lady has had a fantasy of being a "dirty whore"

    Back that up.

it relies upon the judge and the prosecution not being able to tell the difference fantasy and reality, them both being in fact insane

It's based on the comments they both voluntarily made to the media. Are you calling them liars?

Also... I am aware that this thread, and Angus's constant hammering of it, are causing some distress to people. I can lock the thread off should people feel it necessary.

Plus I am sure Tim means her defence

The Prosecution. Again, hard to remember, but this woman was never on trial.

And Tim, now now, I'm sure Angus is a much greater expert on what I said than I am.

  • Busytown: Holiday reading lust,

Oh, I'd LOVE to know how that goes - I am a huge fan of Jasper Fforde but found the last Thursday Next a bit wanting

Me too. I gave my daughter The Eyre Affair to read a couple of nights ago, and she necked the whole thing in one sitting and wants more right about now, please.

I did really enjoy the last Thursday Next, but towards the end, there was something making me feel a little dissatisfied, that I couldn't really put my finger on.

Don't get me wrong, I think John Wyndham's best work has endured for good reasons. But they also have elements that have dated very badly indeed.

Ohhhh... The Trouble With Lichen. Reading it now, you can see what a good book it was, but it creaks so badly with its age.
