  • Busytown: A good read,

Finally had a chance to read the issue in question

Me too, to discover that one of the plagiarised texts is one I used heavily myself producing two Condition-of-England novel essays at Honour's level. For some reason this makes the whole thing feel even shittier to me.

  • Busytown: A good read,

In other words, there are ethical reasons not to borrow other people's words, but also artistic ones.

Yeah, this is part of what gets me, the idea that we have lost whatever might otherwise have been written had the author not stolen somebody else's work. Sorry, 'forgotten to attribute'.

Everything I write as far as web content goes has to pass Copyscape, though that only catches direct copying and pasting. That was still enough for Paul to catch Bruce Logan. And I think it's the cumulative effect of the Logan and George cases with this that's really starting to get me down.

  • Busytown: A good read,

scrupulous and literate as well as a slashingly hot piece of arse

I'm shitted that's a bit long for a t-shirt. See, this is why I keep telling people you're lovely.

Mostly as a euphemism for "a fucking stupid thing to do", I will admit.

And "pretty much impossible to do by accident".

  • Busytown: A good read,

    That's...problematic.

That's a word. It's not the one that sprang to my mind. Or yours, right?

you did have to go through the proofs of your book more than once, didn't you?

I'm just going to giggle in a slightly unhinged fashion. Yes, more than once. More than fuckloads.

    Oh, Jolisa. Beautiful and sad.

And oddly apposite, because plagiarism does make me feel grief-y, as if it's a loss of some kind.

The Herald story makes it sound like the Garth George excuse: that it was quoting that was accidentally not attributed. I get the feeling it's not that simple?

My old man owned his own business by then, and the means testing scheme wasn't set up to understand something or other about how that worked, disaster!

Given their inability to cope with the idea that if my father was dead last year he would still be dead this year, I can imagine.

  • Southerly: Seventy per cent Monteith's,…,

How Then Should I See It is clearly the "great song" of the piece (musically, shades of Voom's Beth), but I Found Out is stacking up as my favourite.

That's pretty much exactly what I was thinking. I have, however, only listened to it on a beautiful Christchurch day. Things may be different on the compulsory 2am stormy night listen.

I think you're right about '92 being the first year of loans, but means-tested fees? That doesn't ring true for me.

1990 and 91 I paid 10% fees. So yes, they were means-tested but you pretty much had to be living in a shoebox in middle of t' road to qualify.

1990, it took eight weeks for student allowances to be processed, during which period one was apparently living on lovely chewy oxygen.

    teal-era BLACKCAPS shirt

    Me three.

But then, I also think that purple England jersey is really pretty. I'd wear that.
