    You're an engineer, right?

Though at the time we were both English students.

But can you DRINK? I guess I will test that out tomorrow.

Yes, I can drink. That was tested pretty early on in the piece. Whether or not I can drink in a way to terrify cities remains to be seen, but yeah, Chch? Jo is incoming.

And thank you all for your good wishes. PASystem has been a positive force for my recovery, however 'woo' that might sound. And hopefully, if nefarious secret planning pans out, I'll get to meet a lot more of you face to face over the next couple of months.

But can you play the violin?

You know, I haven't tested that. So I bet I can.

  • Hard News: Dunce Dunce Revolution,

Many foul words have been directed at Ms Tolley from this household lately.

I've had a guilty sense of relief that my kids are done (well, end of this year) with primary school.

Science is a great way of engaging kids with learning: most of those 'kid' questions they spontaneously ask are about science.

And I know we're not talking about stopping teaching science, this is about support. But that boggles me more in a way: what's more likely to change and need updating over five or ten years, science or reading?

(I have this whole rant my partner has sat through many times about how, very very basic 3Rs stuff aside, science was the most useful thing I learnt at school, on a 'stuff I use on a day to day basis' level. But that's ranty.)

I hope the generated warmth doesn't make them too flaccid.

Flaccid is not a problem. Sticky, on the other hand...

that is what happens when you "Other" people"

Scary stats from the States* show that every time a state passed a DOMA at an election, the LGBT suicide rate went up in that state. That's a pretty clear demonstration of cause and effect.

Leo is clearly totally made of WIN today.

Yes, and no: there are a heap of words in English, and many in Maori*, for 'love and affection and friendship and loyalty and intimacy" et al - but so *few* of them get used.

Yes! Lots of times over. The word 'love' is asked to work awfully hard these days, to be the feeling I have for my partner, for my daughter, for my cat, for Fry's Turkish Delight bars. Yes, you can distinguish by adding adjectives - maternal, romantic, sexual, cupboard - but it does get awfully clumsy.

When I made my first constructed culture, one of the first things I did was give them about twenty words, all of which could be translated into English as kinds of love. And another whole bunch for 'lover'. (Because, y'know, how great would it be to have entirely separate words for somebody you're going to bed with tonight for kicks, and someone you have an intense physical connection with?)

"How can you feel love if you dont have sex?" Each time I've answered, "Let me start with family-"

I've used this very comparison when talking to people who can't grok polyamory. If I have two children, nobody expects me to not be able to love both of them. But people seem to have an awful lot of trouble accepting that somebody can 'properly' love two lovers.

Yes, bisexuals can Pass if they want to. But only by denying part of themselves. I went through my teens not knowing what I was. People seem very ready to see bisexuality as 'best of both worlds', whereas on the 'quite a journey', it's more like not fitting in anywhere. I desperately hope it's easier for bisexuals going through that now than it was for me - I only knew two boxes existed. (The difficulties I had were, I think, a combination of both time period and geographical location. I'm thinking it's still easier to be an out LGBT person in Auckland than in Cambridge.)

But it's really odd that homosexuals outnumber bisexuals so much.

    They don't.

    Demographics of sexual orientation

he largest and most thorough survey in Australia to date was conducted by telephone interview with 19,307 respondents between the ages of 16 and 59 in 2001/2002. The study found that 97.4% of men identified as heterosexual, 1.6% as gay and 0.9% as bisexual. For women 97.7% identified as heterosexual, 0.8% as lesbian and 1.4% as bisexual. Nevertheless, 8.6% of men and 15.1% of women reported either feelings of attraction to the same gender or some sexual experience with the same gender. Half the men and two thirds of the women who had same-sex sexual experience regarded themselves as heterosexual rather than homosexual.

There are a lot of different surveys on that page, and it also points out all the ghastly problems with trying to get good data in this area. Consistently, though, you see male homosexuals outnumbering male bis, but female bis outnumbering lesbians.
