Wyoming was the first state in the world to allow women to vote, in 1869
Oh, this argument!
New Jersey. New Jersey was the first state in the world to allow women to vote.
The framers of New Jersey's first constitution in 1776 gave the vote to "all inhabitants of this colony, of full age, who are worth fifty pounds ... and have resided within the county ... for twelve months." The other twelve new states restricted voting to men. Although some have argued that this gender-neutral language was a mistake, most historians agree that the clear intention was to allow some women to vote. Because married women had no property in their own names and were assumed to be represented by their husbands' votes, only single women voted in New Jersey. But, in the 1790s and 1800s, large numbers of unmarried New Jersey women regularly participated in elections and spoke out on political issues.
The right was rescinded in 1807 and restored in 1920-something.

As I am a paragon of clean living and virtue
The noise I made on reading that cannot be spelt.
Not that I want to make this thread about me, but I'm quietly gutted.
Pants. Not that it's just about me, of course, but I'll be in the Wellington area until I fly out on the 2nd.

Maybe no one died, but if they had been in earshot, they might have turned a startling red colour...
Heh, actually there was a guy just over your left shoulder who was trying VERY hard not to listen, but couldn't quite manage. He kept leaning backwards, catching himself and sitting forward again. The backs of his ears were a very interesting shade of fuschia.

the regency period saw zombies in Pride & Prejudice & Zombies.
I have just finished this book, and it was, in my considered critical over-educated opinion, fucking appalling.
That's all. Public health warning.

Well I did read the bit where you deduced an awful lot about someone’s life from their hairstyle.
Please to quote, st ephen? I don't recall saying anything about hair, either in the article or on the thread, but I can't be arsed going back to check, and it could just be the premature senility.

indulge in their penchant for ritual sodomy while dressed in 19th Century British naval uniforms on a full moon?
There is no way you're going to convince me that doesn't happen here.

ChCh PAS readers all live within a suburb or two of the Uni
No they don't.
people from ChCh think they live in a city
And now you know what I think based on where I live...
They persist with the whole “first four ships” and “what school did you go to?” crap.
...not what I say, which you don't appear to be able to hear. So there's not a lot of point in me continuing to talk.

Islander, I think they still are in most suburbs. But Riccarton/Ilam/Avonhead has become, in the twenty years I've lived in Chch, rapidly racially diverse. That's the little bit I live in, so that's the Chch I see. It's given my children something I find really precious, because I grew up in a very white town (and white trash too, it's okay, I don't mind).
I guess I'm just a little tired of people like the guys in this column being somehow more 'representative' of what Chch is like than I am, or Ian or Joe or David.
Meanwhile, Nick Smith and Rodney Hide get to 'review' ECan. That worries me a lot more than boot boys and boy racers.

nowhere else in New Zealand have I encountered the sheer casual racism and homophobia of Christchurch
My experience differs. Enormously. Have you ever been in a rural service town?
Nice lumping there, btw. My youngest child attends Riccarton Primary. It's 30% Pakeha.

where I almost died twice trying to run in 30 degree heat while smoking cheap Asian ciagarettes
You wanna watch that heat, dude, it'll kill you.
