So, David, what you're saying is that you take no responsibility for what appears on your site?
Odd that you don't have time to moderate your comments, but it seems you do have time to follow all your track-backs.
You're responsible for your own actions, David. The commentary at Kiwiblog is a direct result of those actions, as the commentary here reflects Russell's pastoral care. Your refusal to acknowledge that when you must know it strikes me as... disingenuous really does seem to be the word.

The idea is that it tells people when they step over the line, and an incentive not to keep doing so. Last time I checked I have handed out demerits on several hundred occasions to around 100 different people. Most respond to it - 20 or so have carried on and been suspended.
So, can I take it that you're by and large both happy with and taking responsibility for the content of that thread?

And I don't know how I could have gone any softer on Chris Carter. Three times I said I thought his motivations was good.
Followed by a 'but', every single time. I'm not calling you disingenuous, but...
And while you're here, would you care to actually address Russell's point about the comment thread?

Courtesy of Neil Gaiman, I've just read this Wall Street Journal piece about Banned Books Week. It's... bordering on hilarious the way it manages to portray librarians as unAmerican enemies of free speech, and book challenging as both a sure way to protect children, and too ineffective to worry about. Kudos. The cartoon is especially peachy.

I am concerned about what their actions tell us about how they have been brought up and educated.
I don't know whether it's still the case now, but when I went to school, WW2 was part of the 5th form History curriculum, therefore optional. And Lincoln is an agricultural college: basically if you were doing swot subjects like history at school, you probably went to Canterbury instead.
And the age they are, not only is WW2 not really real to them, but it's probably not something their parents endured either. That's not to excuse, just to try to understand.

I take it to Kill a Mockingbird was a standard English text here too ?
Almost all of my high school English set text novels are on that list. Mockingbird, Catcher, Lord of the Flies, The Go-Between, even Summer of my German Soldier.
Restricted to 16 and over?
Honestly? No, I don't think contraceptive advice should be restricted to over 16s. Fortunately these days neither do Family Planning or the Ministry of Education. But yes, it is a change over time - when I was at high school we got our sex ed in secret so at least some of it wouldn't be after the horse had bolted.

Racist against Southern white trash?
Racist in the same way this play is anti-Semitic. If you depict discrimination, you must be supporting it...

Disturbing to see books about birth control, pregnancy and childbirth restricted.
Yeah, sex is bad. Anthony Comstock said so:
The Comstock Act, (ch. 258 17 Stat. 598 enacted March 3, 1873) was a United States federal law which made it illegal to send any "obscene, lewd, and/or lascivious" materials through the mail, including contraceptive devices and information. In addition to banning contraceptives, this act also banned the distribution of information on abortion for educational purposes.

Seriously, Aleister Crowley wrote limericks? Now that is scary.
Isn't it? And apparently entirely true, he did. And boy are they... something...

That Wikipedia list is blowing my mind. Deenie? The one about the impossibly attractive teen with scoliosis? What... oh, that's right. Wanking. There's wanking in Deenie.
Oh Danielle, Judy Blume is the most dangerous author of them all.
