Oh, and I think Emma would love the studded knee highs.

I prefer the lace-up ones. Ginx is basically my current boot, only more so.

You know, I tried. I've followed every single shoe link on this thread, and in less than a minute, I've been looking at lingerie or evening dresses every damn time.

Thank you Sacha, and everyone else who've sent me emails and tweets and stuff, it's much appreciated. I am planning to write a proper column about it so we don't have to worry about sidetracking other stuff. I'm just a little intimidated by the quality of the previous hospital writing on PA.

Back slightly off the main track, I have noticed a disproportionate threat assessment leading to some rather startling decision making: for instance, the concerned friend who, on hearing I was planning to walk home four blocks from a party, suggested I get a ride with someone who'd been drinking instead.

And I think you should reread your last post before you accuse me of being closed minded. You certainly can influence my thinking, but not like that.

Andrew, I gave it a shot in my first comment to you, when I said:

Perhaps you might reflect on the idea that we appear to disagree as to what a 'reasonable precaution' is, rather than whether or not people should take them?

which you completely ignored, along with all my other points. So yeah, you got the rough side. Why do you think I should be obliged to quietly and politely repeat myself over and over again to someone who isn't listening to me, on my last day pre-admission?

And like Stephen said, if your view is based in the 'real world', you should be able to back it up with evidence. Otherwise it's just another opinion, and your 'oh you academics are so out of touch' is a bit patronising, yes? Towards people who actually have been women out on the town, which I'm assuming you haven't?

There is an implicit demand behind this thinking that all rapists be somehow removed from the planet, and that somehow society should conspire to keep the victim absolutely, completely safe iin all circumstances.

There's an implicit demand in what YOU're saying that women keep themselves safe by staying home which, let me fucking REPEAT, is the most dangerous place for her to be. Not in a bar, not dressed like a slut, but at home. Your 'common sense' assumptions are quite simply not reality-based.

But Danielle is quite correct, there is absolutely nothing anyone can say that will alter your perception that what you are saying is 'brave' and 'politically incorrect', and not just an offensive steaming pile of horseshit.

When exactly did this wisdom of the ages become so goddam controversial?

When it became completely indistinguishable from the Stupid of Ages?

I'm personally not really prepared to go all the way back to page 5 of this argument to address something that's already been addressed, and which hasn't responded to any of the counter-arguments. Perhaps you might reflect on the idea that we appear to disagree as to what a 'reasonable precaution' is, rather than whether or not people should take them?

"There is something crude and raw about the air till lunchtime. It is necessary to get through the morning to arrive at the afternoon, but, by breakfasting late and lunching early, one could make it very short indeed.

    I'm 100% behind this.

Three pages about shoes! Is that what the Women's Movement was fighting for?

What I really want to do is take this from Megan:

I have a job and my own money, and therefore I can buy as many damn pairs of impractical shoes as my bank manager will let me. Because I have choices and options and if I choose to waste my money on frivolous things, well, no one can tell me to do anything different. And God help anyone who'd try.

and drag it back out and cover it in kisses.

Tribes or packs conform to reinforce the community bonds, so conforming to a fashion makes sense from the perspective of communicating to your friends that you are "part of the same pack".

Which is true, I think, but having been a member of a tight pack with a very distinctive dress sense, even within the pack there are large variations on how much particular individuals choose to buy into the pack look, consciously or not. And maybe it's the individuals who feel most secure in their place in the pack who feel most comfortable not conforming, but I suspect there's also a huge dose of the personal level of bloody-mindedness in that. (This applies to both males and females - the KAOS look has elements of androgyny about it.)

So Susan and I spend years being members of the same pack, and years later when we want to treat ourselves, she gets acryllic nails and I get tattoos. People make very different assumptions about us from an exterior view on the basis of those things, and those assumptions are less than correct.

I don't understand why it's the impractical things that are fashionable.
