  • Up Front: Take Strictly, as Directed,

The British legal system, in an effort to be able to prosecute perpetrators of domestic violence, can now bring charges even if the victim doesn't want to.

The same is true in at least some states of the US. I've seen BDSM subs talking about being scared to make too much noise in case their neighbours get the cops called to a 'domestic disturbance' - once the police are in, charges go forward no matter what the 'victim' wants.

Oh man, why can't all porn be shot that prettily?

I was really looking for an excuse to link to that. It's gorgeous.

  • Hard News: Where your money goes,

Despite its extensive history of politicking, Maxim is indeed a registered charity.

Its return shows $1.2 million in income last year, almost all of it in donations.

It gets better! Their fourth biggest donor is Middleton Grange School. Private school, government funding, etc.

And did the news report highlight this at all?

In our house we refer to this as 'the six o'clock gnrrrrghs'.

  • Hard News: A Real Alternative,

When a youth, bred in the illiberal and niggardly fashion that we were describing, gets a taste of the honey of the drones and associates with fierce and cunning creatures who know how to purvey pleasures of every kind and variety and condition...

See, this is almost word for word what we used to say about first year uni students from "good" schools with strict parents. You'd see one fall in the river and say, "Ah, there we go, too much honey of the drones again, they're not used to it, not with all that illiberal niggardliness they've been raised on."

  • Southerly: Bay Area Blues,

Then later, I experience horrible moments of clarity when I ask myself: "Why am I writing this?", "Who will read it?", and "Have I finally flipped?"

I suspect there might be a profitable side-line in Writer Patting. "No, really, sweetheart, it's funny/kind/sad/awesome, you rock, you really do, have another coffee."

And the penny finally drops and I know who Robert Urquhart is. I feel like such a nong.

It is a well-known fact in the appropriate circles that KAOS and associates cannot identify each other by their real names.

  • Hard News: Food and drink,

I think this metaphor falls down, in that you should never, under any circumstances, order a cheap tart delivered to your house. Also, you really don't want a pizza that's been eaten by 5,000 other guys beforehand.

I'm going to put this in the Two and a Half Men category. It's clearly meant to be funny, but I can't bring myself to laugh. The slut-shamy just makes me feel uncomfortable and sad.

  • Up Front: Any Port in a Storm,

    Do you understand that?

    ...

As for the fictional women you've plausibly created, I have a question for her: "Are you insane, leave!"

I'll take that as a 'no' then.

Also, considering the rest of your comment ignored everything I said, I'll leave you to have this conversation by yourself. You clearly don't need anybody else for it.

  • Up Front: Any Port in a Storm,

what's your point exactly? Men are bad!

Let's pretend for a moment that you actually believe that's my point, despite the fact that it's not said or implied anywhere in the piece. If you have trouble believing that's not my secret agenda, perhaps you could pop off and read this and this, and possibly notice that since the very first column I wrote here, I've been saying the exact opposite.

This particular column was written to address people who simply cannot understand how an intelligent woman can get herself into this kind of situation, or how difficult it is to get out of it. I thought perhaps that, given I do understand that, I could share that understanding for people who haven't had my personal experience of it. Do you understand that?
