Though, then she'll call me a bitch again.

Rest assured, no matter what happens, at some point I will call you a bitch again. Because I love you.

And do carry on with the phone geekery. You know I adore geekage. Also, this kind of knowledge is very handy.

Also, can I suggest that if anyone wants books from David, they use the Amazon link? He'll still get a cut, without having to actually do anything.

Honestly, gosh, not angling for presents. (To be fair, I am about that subtle when I AM angling for presents.) It was what Karl said when he gave me the iPhone, that it was a gift he could keep on giving me stuff for.

Also, to add to the list of great things to have in your house for emergencies: wet wipes. I happened to have baby wipes in the house for cleaning purposes, and they've been brilliant, because we haven't been able to so much as wash our hands - there's water, but it's not clean and we had no power to boil it.

Thanks guys, we will look at getting a car charger, it's a good idea. And I need cases and a dock for my iPhone anyway. Honestly I do.

And yeah, my phone battery always goes flat faster when I'm down at my Mum's where the connection is really shitty.

But for the sense of chaos I like your description better.

I briefly considered writing something organised and coherent, but a) I couldn't do it, and b) it wasn't fitting.

And... yes. Yous are all awesome in all your different ways.

We should tell Haywood the Hugging Booth is for me, he'll believe that. Then it only remains to lure him into it.

Until she writes a post from her phone at 2am, I am going to call her a pussycat.

Srsly, can we get Haywood a "services to journalism" for that? They seem to be going pretty cheap these days.

  • Hard News: Again: Is everyone okay?,

Friends of mine set up this facebook 'event', if it hasn't been linked to already. The attending list is people who are okay, the 'awaiting reply' list is friends we haven't heard from. There's a page for KAOS people as well. Most of the "missing" will simply not have power, and the phone system is intermittent. (Still, landlines are a more reliable way to get in touch with people without power than cellphones).

I weigh up spending 5 and a half hours in a car with a meowing cat, each way, against the hot showers and holiday

Yeah, my mother's house in Timaru is currently empty, but the cats are SO stressed, and the idea of putting them in the car and then keeping them locked in the house... too much.

    Go to my parents'. Seriously.

Yes... you have so sold me on your parents.

Indeed, I have been reading my way through this thread, and quietly sniffling. Yous guys are awesome, and I will admit (though don't tell my family) that the hardest thing about the whole 'no power' dealy is missing out on all of this.

Also, I have just seen the first pictures. I have cried, a lot. This was so much scarier, and so much more devastating, and so many people I know have lost their houses this time.

I will write more fully later. I would do quite a lot for a hot shower.

Honestly this time... if we didn't have cats, we'd have left town today.

"Long term reversible" - that's vasectomies, right? Among other things? My then-beneficiary partner's vasectomy was paid for by the state in 1997...
