maybe because the Greens are so gay-friendly...

Not meaning to pick on you guys, I vote Green, but if that's the case then for the Love of Mike could one of you put the fucking bill in the ballot!

  • Hard News: Gaying Out,

So all we need is an MP brave enough to put it in the ballot.

And in order to suck some of the poison out of the debate, it should be a straight, married MP. Someone who can say, "I have this right, it's important to me, it should be extended to everyone."

  • Hard News: Gaying Out,

There would be no new votes in marriage equality. But perhaps now is the time for the idea to be formalised into a private member's bill.

It'd have to be a private member's bill, and it'd have to be a conscience vote. Which is why my electorate vote is in it. As soon as we get a candidate list, I'll be asking each and every one of them how they would vote if such a private member's bill was introduced, and the answer to that question will determine my vote.

For fuck's sake, you're the Prime Minister. No, we are not going to "wait until your book" to get a direct answer to a simple question.

It would have been flip and insulting enough on an ordinary issue. But on something that affects the basic civil rights of the people standing around you? That's repulsive.

Still, at least if we had some fucking polling on this issue, Key might be a bit more familiar with his position. I want to see the numbers. Are we really much, much more conservative than Australia on this issue?

  • Up Front: Say When,

the amount of slut-shaming I’ve copped over the years.

Enjoyed the laughs in your post, Emma, but not sure about this.

Sally, that's a description of my own experience, and my reaction to it. I don't think you mean to say you're unsure of it, surely? Because that would be implying that it didn't happen. I'm not saying it happens to everyone, or that the opposite - criticism for dressing too conservatively - doesn't happen. But yes, women criticising other women for dressing too sluttily does happen. It may never have happened to you, but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

You can keep this thing simple - wear what you like - or you can make it a whole lot more complicated: body shape, fat and fashion are feminist issues. I think both approaches have merit.

The TOFO approach is, "Body shape, fat and fashion are feminist issues, THEREFORE, wear what you like, and respect the rights of other people to do the same." The theory is very, very simple. The practise takes a bit of work.

While I agree telling older wimmin to grow their hair is asking for a slapping, the point made is that if you look at different age groups there is a distinct changing of style. When someone breaks that mould it stands out.

This. And yes, it's not about conforming to the 'should', just knowing when the 'should' kicks in so I at least know if I'm conforming or not.

Also. The TOFO FAQ. Every time I type that I think about how much Gio likes acronyms.

and decided then that any surgery for me would be because I would die otherwise.

So if you'd been in my position last year, Steve, you'd have left the brain tumor in and gone blind? There was no danger of death.

Also, most women I know are happy to point out when they think their husband's hair is shite (too long, too short, too grey etc) as well as when other aspects of his grooming are not to their desire

There is a difference between me saying "Honey, I think you look better clean-shaven," or him saying "I like you with your hair long," and saying "All women should have long hair," or "All men should be beardless." The former is fine, the latter not so much.

Um... Helen Mirren looks much like my mother did at that age, and Mum'd had four children. Mirren dresses much like my mother did as well. Okay, her attractiveness is more 'conventional' (if there is such a thing as 'a conventionally-hot sixty year old, and I don't think there is), but that doesn't stop her being attractive. I don't think her natural body type should count against her. And yes, the Mirren Argument always makes me think of Cher. Helen Mirren is also herself.

When I was down for Mum's funeral, I worked out how old the last survivor of my group of "aunts" is. I'd always known she was a little younger than the rest, but I hadn't really thought about it. She's 77. She looks... 60? Maybe? And she'd be easily twice the size of my mother. Like The Mirren, she doesn't have children. That seems to work quite well as an anti-ageing treatment. Mum's friend Carol looks maybe 50, and has a Super Gold Card.

I think we've solidly made the adjustment that '40 is the new 30' (I can't imagine freaking out about getting old at thirty), but not so much that 60 appears to be the new 50. The concept of "middle age" seems to be getting a bit slippery.

  • Up Front: Say When,

but I'm 22 and I worry about what's 'appropriate' to wear.

At 22, I was still working it out, as Bart basically described. At 23, I had my first child, and it became all about stuff that allowed me to get my breasts out in public.

I was surprised by how demurely you dressed, TBH, given your claims of unabashed slagginess. I was expecting a tank top, miniskirt and CFM boots.

I love me some boots. But in general I play to my strengths, so it's more cleavage than legs and midrift. And part of the working-out process was discovering that my legs look better in seemingly-demure moleskin pants than in a short skirt.

But yes, the claiming of slagginess is to some degree a sarcastic response to the amount of slut-shaming I've copped over the years. Self-defence.
