Heineken... and Chris Knox!

  • Danielle,

A friend in America (no, really) just sent me this Heineken ad with music by one Chris Knox.

(I hope this isn't old news to everyone but me!)

  • Russell Brown,

OMG! He kept that quiet ...

It looks to be creating quite a stir amongst fans of songs and beer.

I'm guessing the director Todd Haynes is a fan.

It's either re-recorded or remixed from the original.

  • GemmaG,

Not re-recorded at all! Chris tells me they picked it up as-is, where-is.

  • Lyndon Hood,

Interesting panning of ad concept and comments debate

"this to a (disturbingly) catchy, bubblegum ditty"

From a Chrysalis music sampler, I gather. But they've re-EQ'd it at least. The drums are louder and the guitar is quieter.

  • barnaclebarnes,

Ads are a great way to break 'new' singers. I wonder of any of Chris Knox's stuff is available on iTunes in the US?

Yep, the albums Meat and Beat are available - and unsurprisingly the track "It's Love" is top of the list for popularity. As one iTunes review says. "i heard your song 'its love' on the advert and liked it so much i bought it." (Hmm, do Americans say advert? I think not - commercial, more like).

I've met a few underground fans here who speak of the man and his music in hushed, reverent tones. But this is clearly a breakthrough moment for him, and well-earned too.

There's a good story here: Tegel offered a swag of money for the use of the same song, provoking something of a crisis of conscience, given that Chris and Barbara are both vegetarians, and not at all fond of Tegel's practices. But also not exactly rich and not getting any younger ...

And then came Heineken Premium Light. Chris says that made the decision to turn down Tegel a whole lot easier.

  • Nick D'Angelo,

Oh for a time machine to go back to 1980:
"Keep at it Chris, radio might not play your music now, but one day your songs will be used to sell loaves of bread and beer to the masses!"

I wonder how he would have responded? (Probably by backing away slowly from the nutter claiming to be from the future... )

Brings a whole new light to the beer Vs food decision.
