I think a good rule of thumb in these cases is to ask oneself how would it read if you replaced all instances of X with "Jew?" If you end up with something that could have appeared in a 1930s German newspaper then there is something wrong.

I note he now calls me "Coddingtonswallop" on his website.
Not wanting to toot my own horn, but that was my entry in the word of the year competition.
HONK HONK!!

When will she have the courage of her political convictions and take personal responsibility? A simple "I was wrong" would do.
Don:
What do 'political convictions' have to do with it? At the risk of getting a wee bit circle jerky, here's a textbook example of owning up. Really, Debs, not that hard once your ego gets out of the picture.
-
Nice work!
The one thing that I'm most curious about is this: given her continued vehement defense of her article, does she still believe that the article's intent is accurate? That the gathering asian crime tide is still ominous enough to warrant sending them back?
-
Well Heather, now that she can see how the Press Council has been bought off by the triads, I guess she is even more emphatic on that point.
-
Good work welldone -
What if Tze Ming lost? God knows laws don't equal justice. Celebrate for sure and deservedly so but I'm lost a little on the meaning of and any ramifications from this ruling. Certainly Debs isn’t taking anything from it.
Furthermore we have a failed Act politician echoing Labour immigration policies of Leeanne D of the Harley Davidson keeping our cultural heritage which of course was built on historic racism.
I fear nothings has changed and the left & right are still all riche with the status quo irrespective of this ruling.
-
Great result. Now Debs can focus on the true enemy, the Masons.
I find this heartening for three reasons - that she was called out by a group of people who kept at it until they got a hearing, that she was ruled against officially, which shows that the system does work, and that the complainants did it in the public eye via way of this blog and other publications.
-
So, apart from PA readers, the Asia:NZ Foundation and a few journos, think anyone else cares? Coddington had her say first, and was able to pre-emptively deflect the Press Council damage.
-
"A "gathering crime tide" is not a synonym for a "crime wave', as Mabbett and Mok seem to think... A tide goes in and out..."
That is just... awesome. No wonder all those waves just keep piling up all over the place. I must add "crime tide" to my lexicon immediately.
Next time we get burgled: "It's ok kids, it was just a crime tide.. the telly will be back in 11.5 hours"
-

Who controls the British crown?
Who keeps the metric system down?
Asians do! Asians do!
Who keeps Atlantis off the maps?
Who keeps the Martians under wraps?
Asians do! Asians do!
Who holds back the electric car?
Who makes Steve Guttenberg, a star?
Asians do! Asians do!
Who robs cave fish of their sight?
Who rigs every Oscar night?
Asians do! Asians do! -
Juha, at the risk of pimping my own handiwork, this story is getting on the radar - see "asian" and "press". Keep an eye on it tomorrow and we'll see if it's getting traction.

Nothing to do with us, says Rodney Hide:

TO THE TUNE OF "I'M CALLED LITTLE BUTTERCUP" from HMS Pinafore
I am Deborah Coddington – mad Deborah Coddington,
Though I could never tell why,
I hate every Asian who enters this nation,
Bigoted Coddington I!I always have time to expose Asian crime,
Journalising the pure anecdotal;
Tuberculoses, addictions to pokies
And kidnappings fill up my total.T’was Alistair Taylor, and Colin, and Roger
I lured with my feminine wiles;
And if that distresses, I have the addresses
Of neigbourhood paedophiles.I am Deborah Coddington – bad Deborah Coddington,
Though I could never tell why,
I dislike each Asian of any persuasion,
Bigoted Coddington I! -
Bravo! Bravo!

Franks has gone into bat for Debs on Nat Radio this evening.
We're seeing far too much of Franks in an election year ... is this the start of a(nother) right wing economic party whos point of difference is being anti-asian?
-
Don't know about Franks - but I am worried about school principals today. Do they not give a shit about our kids anymore?
-
Good result. Nice to be back in a country which has such checks and balances. I wish Japan (where I spend a fair bit of time) had a Press Council. Their media is a disgrace with regard to foreigners. Mainly Chinese, as it happens. We should send the Asia-New Zealand Foundation over there...
-
Oh, dear. I've just heard the Franks podcast on Codders (its the second session if you want to save some bandwidth - 9.3 megs).
He is wrong in suggesting that DC has had her freedom to speak, and even twist the truth removed. She hadn't. She still is peddling the same line in one of our major newspapers.
All that is happening is that the publication will to publish the Press Council decision. Does Franks not understand this?
-
*did not author the complaint, and not a party to the complaint
* *probably means he never said this
***he never called her thisI don't suppose statements to the Press Council have to be in sworn affadavits? Otherwise she could wind up getting the same treatment as Jeffrey Archer and Jonathan Aitken. They could put her in a cell with Donna Awatere Huata.
Incidentally, does her attitude that only "working journalists" are fit to judge her apply to others - such as drug dealers and car thieves?

With all due disrespect, Chuckie, I don't think Japan is a part of the world where we should be pontificating too loudly on the subject of jingoistic media.
-

He's either lying or more stupid than I thought. I'm on this tomorrow, for sure.
-
Amusing to read her insinuations that some of the complainants were motivated by her previous status as an ACT MP.
I prefer to think that, in a country as small as New Zealand, vocal ratbags can always retain a following in their own right.
-
Good on ya, Tze Ming & Co.
Tze Ming: ...we also discovered during the complaints process that Coddington cannot spell 'xenophobia'.
If Ms Coddington had written an article called "Polynesian Peril", she wouldn't just be taken to the Press Council - she'd either be doing a Salman Rushdie, or nominating herself for a Darwin Award.
On a side note, here's a novel solution for race-hate offenders: maroon them in Tokyo or Hong Kong for a couple of weeks, and they might understand what prejudice is about.
-
Franks has gone into bat for Debs on Nat Radio this evening.
Here's what I find bizarre about their position: Franks, Coddington et al were MPs for ACT, the liberal party, the party that wants to fight for personal freedom and keep the evil power of the state out of people's lives.
Unless, apparently, you have the poor taste to be asian in which case the state should be able to strip you of your residency or citizenship, stick you on a boat and ship you back to communist China.
Does it strike anyone else as weird that these staunch defenders of indivuality and personal freedom have picked racial profiling and forced deportation as free speech issues worth taking a stand on?
