  • Ben Austin,

Wow, he really seems to be getting into this Elder Statesman thing.

Might I ask what the New Zealand Centre actually does? Please don't tell me they have "NZ studies".

  • WH,

Winston Peters is a strange cat. I remember him during the 90's talking about export led recoveries, the Phillips Curve trade off, national savings rates, and how we should try to emulate what were then known as the Asian Tiger economies.

WINSTON PETERS: My experience of Asian leadership is that their intelligence, their comprehension of Western politics is far deeper than many of us would admit. It's far more knowledgeable and they would be totally understanding of it, excepting when I was in China - if I was in China - I would not, as a Minister of Foreign Affairs, be making any comment on the Government's position [on the merit of a free trade deal with China] because that's the job of the Minister for Trade.

  • David Haywood,

    Alternative caption:

"I had this really fucked-up dream where Winston Peters was standing at a podium giving mad props to international students, academics, and politicians from China... and then later, when I got my photographs of Beijing developed, these images were on the film. I swear that I'll never do magic mushrooms again as long as I live."

  • Graeme Edgeler,

    Respect, Winston Peters!

You sure there was a comma? Maybe it's an order.

  • Nobody Important,

    Funny!

More funny if they had of introduced him as 'Winston Pedo'

[Off topic] I saw in the news the other day that somewhere in China they are building a replica Rotorua. We are supposed to be honoured evidently, part of a sister city thing evidently, yadda yadda yadda evidently.

Whilst overseas I saw the same story on TV but this time it was a copy of Devon in the UK. Evidently they are replicating towns from all over the world.

Those cunning Chinese! Not only are they taking over the worlds manufacturing, but soon they'll take over the world's tourism. Imagine it: a seven day tour of Rotorua, Devon, Madrid, New York, etc etc all from the comfort of one coachliner!

Oh well, they have been making the world's souvenirs for yonks already.

There's a couple of themeparks where you can just walk around all the major tourist attractions; and see the Eiffel Tower, the pyramids, Uluru, an African safari (with a John Coltrane soundtrack and fornicating elephants), pre-11/9 NYC and a "traditional Maoris Village" all in one day. See the wonderful film The World, and some of my photos here.

  • Hadyn Green,

Bro, it's gone further than that, the Chinese* pirated a whole theme park!

    *Sorry for the blanket blame

  • Craig Ranapia,

Gee, someone's been hiding Winston First's poll numbers from the Great Leader, walking him through the script and making sure the podium is properly electrified in case he does lose his mind and diss the emergent market. Kudos, MFAT!

And I do love the whole 'Respect!' thing -- I guess Tom Cruise's turn as the Suzanne Paul of Misogyny in Magnolia wasn't well known to the MC. :)
