  • Graeme Edgeler,

Doesn't say much that the company didn't know about treating either. #fail

    No-one seems to.

95bFM and others a holding a concert - "Post the Vote" - $10 entry, but free for people who vote in the Auckland Elections.

If only they read section 126 of the Local Electoral Act...

  • Sacha,

If only they read section 126 of the Local Electoral Act

What does the qualifier "corruptly" mean in that context? Can't see it defined, but am not going to trawl the whole Act.

  • Graeme Edgeler,

No-one really knows. It may mean the same thing it meant to Taito Philip Field (corruptly accepting a bribe is illegal). When the Court of Appeal gets back to us, I might remember to let you know =)

  • Paul Campbell,

Electoral Act 'bribery' is a tricky thing too - as one of our local candidates in Dunedin discovered - she got away with it by the skin of her teeth - she promised "If I'm elected I'll give 10% of what I'm paid for being a councilor to a local charity" (in a particular part of town) -

If she had nominated WHICH charity (so a voter could know if they would benefit if she were elected) then it would have been bribery under the electoral act

Section 125 "Every person commits the offence of bribery who ... promises .... any money .... to any other person .... in order to induce any elector to vote"

Of course that sounds like just about any party platform in the general election "vote for us and we'll lower taxes". And yeah I think that the radio contest crossed that line.

What was going to happen (or maybe already did) was 'personation' (section 128) - you mjust have to think that this sort of thing was rife 100 years ago if the various electoral things you can do wrong all have their own names that are not now in common use

  • Paul Campbell,

JLM : yeah - that's a weird list for a 'lefty' one - a really strange mix of the left and local businessmen

It's also an illegal list - it's against the law to publish something that looks like the real ballot - (even with the 'not a real ballot' printed on it) - you can show people how to vote with some fake names - but that particular document goes too far

(and I apologise for my posting above that somehow became mangled beyond recognition?)

Meh... sorry Matt, but when you're endorsing an unstable thug like Andy Williams (and find Cameron Slater a jolly good wheeze) I'd disrespectfully suggest you don't head north of the Bridge any time soon. (It also strikes me as good form that when you're encouraging people to vote for your partner, a little full disclosure would be in order.)

McCarten did omit that highly relevant fact - and compounds it by saying (without a hint of irony) for the same ward:

"It would be a victory for ‘name over substance’ if C&R’s Christine Fletcher beat one of them because she married into the family"

Not up to the standards I'd expect of the man. Also ignores another competing candidate with a strong track record in the ward.

  • Just thinking,

Bob Parker is not giving interviews as the poor bloody Bexley Residence set-up to sue the CCC.

So much for opposing it in Court Bob. It seems the only ones to opose it were the original residence & a scientist, I wonder what that was about?

I don't know that to be correct Sacha but I could be wrong. If you go back a few years I would agree.

  • Sacha,

And the Herald unabashedly gives Banks a campaign platform in a story about outgoing Council CEOs' golden handshakes - as if Mayors get to decide that on their own.

No wonder the public don't know who does what. And I'd expect a strong formal complaint about biased publication during an election period.

[Banks:] "Whereas the CEO of Manukau City has received a huge exit package, which has been kept secret as we can clearly understand it would.

"Ask Len Brown to tell you how much some of the poorest people in New Zealand have had to pay the CEO in golden handshake and golden exit packages."

Banks said any money paid in packages wouldn't be recouped.

"It's too late. It's gone. The remuneration packages will be made public. Like I've just done with my CEO.

"Secrecy surrounding this speaks volumes about how Len Brown wastes ratepayer cash."

The Herald on Sunday revealed in June that Manukau chief executive Leigh Auton was in line for a massive payout. The council decided to keep details confidential. Auton said: "The figure I've heard being quoted is absolutely incorrect."

I'm not saying anything. He's got an email if you want to ask anyone.. Jus' don't think that should be bandied about if one don't know.

  • Craig Ranapia,

    ?? You sure ?

Sure as. I now stand correct that Matt and Cathy are no longer in a relationship, but the general principle still holds true IMO. There's nothing wrong with a political commentator endorsing their partner or a family member/close friend for public office, but a simple disclosure is every bit as relevant as (say) if I was a business commentator writing in praise of Veolia Transport -- where my partner happens to work. You disclose potential conflicts of interest like that, and let the reader make of them what they will.

I think you need to withdraw your comment in more explicit terms than that, Craig. There's no "general principle" to assert if the people concerned don't have a relationship to declare.

I had no idea about that anyway. I've voted for Cathy Casey because I think she's hard-working and intelligent.
