  • Rob Hosking,

Erm, it was more in the nature of... ceremony? Like taking communion.

Church services down your way sound a damn sight more interesting than the ones I've been to....

I've been thinking about going Wiccan and now this decides it! Though I'm not sure how to consecrate chocolate mousse...

  • Rob Hosking,

I think it makes a kind of sense to date a few dickheads during the undergraduate years.

You mean there's a choice in the matter?

And does 'dickhead' apply to male and females? because as a term it sounds very XY chromosomeish.

Personally I use the term 'f-wit' because it sounds less gender-specific, and in the usage we're talking about here, it is applicable on more than one level.

  • Isabel Hitchings,

Emma Yup - I'd worry much more if my kids wanted to up and marry the first person they got sqidgy with than if they spread a few oats first (within reasonable parameters of not catching stuff and treating people decently of course).

Rob a less gender specific term (and f-wit does the job just fine) probably is required. I was being not soe much gender-specific as Isabel-specific and thinking about exactly what__ I__ did at uni.

I believe it's an accurate description of a particular state of mind no matter who it's used for. We're just not so used to seeing male putdowns used in general speech. Television advertising on the other hand...

Indeed, I don't think there's much point in trying to get proscriptive about the slangy cutting edge of language. It's not so much a matter of 'can people use this term for this gender' as 'do they' and if they do, that's pretty much it.

Also, the only 'girly' equivalent I can come up with off the top of my head is both a proper noun and an in-joke, and also not very nice. (I try to be nicer/less interesting in my old age, but occasionally I have lapses. I think I said some pretty sexist things after seeing the Viaduct Basin for the first time on Saturday night.) I guess I think of a fuckwit as being substantially nastier and more deliberate than a dickhead, who's just like that.

    But, y'know, potato, potato.

But perfectly apt things, I'm sure. Dickhead would be on the polite end of that spectrum.

  • Sacha,

I quite like the word "munter" for its generous nature but unnmistakeable disapproval of stupidity. And the last season of Outrageous Fortune did much to flesh out its hitherto unexpected spiritual dimensions..

I have recently re-found 'boof-head'... it has a nice expressive ring to it

And even more generous - affectionate, even.

  • Rob Hosking,

'Boof-head' is a term I first heard from an Australian colleague when I worked on a gardening labouring gang.

He used it a lot, and I always understood it to be a sort of Australian equivalent of 'bogan'.

"Munter" is great. But what happened to "dag"?

Bogans are generally boofy, but not all boofheads are bogans. Dropkick is a closer synonym IMHE.
