So, so excited about the return of Project Runway. For a while there after America's Next Top Model ended, they were showing bad movies on Friday nights on TV3! I thought my unbroken run of alternating crazy megalomaniacs (Tyra Banks) and crazy talented people who broke into song randomly at sewing machines (Jay McCarroll, Santino) had come to an end! Plus I just want to hang out with Tim Gunn all day long. 'Designers! Gather round! Make it work!'

Can anyone confirm that during the week, TV3 led a news bulletin with Paris Hilton getting out of jail? <sundry sarcasm>
I would have thought you'd check first before throwing that one out (did you hear it from Damian?). I watch 3News every night and don't recall them ever leading with it. As I recall they did drop in some video ('vision' I think the tellytypes call it) of her departing jail at around 6.30pm; fresh off the satelite. But they had the good sense not to call it 'Breaking News'.
Campbell Live replayed the same footage that night, too. He had on Robert Thompson, Professor of Popular Culture at the University of Syracuse, New York who correctly called them out on doing a story about 'why is everyone so fascinated by Paris' as a pretext to running a story about Paris without appearing to endorse her celebrity. Campbell had the good sense to laugh it off with "you've totally blown our cover!"

And I can confirm TV3 led with Miss Hilton. They crossed live.

Do you watch Project Runway, InternationalObserver? What's great about it is the large percentage of contestants with actual skill, drive, and vision. They're often really creative, hard-working, interesting folks. Of course you have your occasional random famewhores and crazy manipulators (Wendy Pepper, I'm looking at you!), but I don't think your comparison is all that apt.

(Although I do find the kneejerk 'all reality television is much more inane than scripted television' thing rather silly. Reality TV, even in its crappiest forms, allows you to look deep within the craven souls of your fellow human beings. Drama! Humour! Sheer flat-out weirdness! Strategy! Manipulation! Stalking! People wearing horribly unflattering clothing! It's all there!)

Paris Hilton and Project Runway are both fluff that have no real impact on our lives. They are merely television constructs; a distraction to the mundane life.
The Apprentice, on the other hand, is a worthy and revealing insight into the hidden machinations of big business and the people who run them. A secret glimpse into the boardrooms of the people who shape and control our lives, allowing us a rare opportunity to watch so that we may learn how to serve them better.

TV3's late news certainly led with Paris. I think it was last Weds. I missed the 6pm showing that night, but the hourly updates after that led with it.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it didn't lead on 6pm bulletin either - but Graeme says it did. (And leading with it on Nightline hardly counts.)
BTW - Can anyone explain why TV1's Sunday programme decided to run that item/film promo for the movie Zodiac? The film has already finished its run in NZ (unless you count a last gasp in Otago). Was the item 'filler'??

An occasional series of new Jane Austen adaptations begins on TV1, starting with Mansfield Park, starring Billie Piper's bosom, according to Kathryn Flett in the Guardian.
Oh. FFS... I watched the thing last night, and to be honest even this hardcore Janeite thought it was a piss-poor adaptation of her weakest novel. Certainly not Ms. Piper's finest hour.
But, to be honest, I do find it rather weird, well, just how sexist so much London media feminism sounds. Also a wee bit ironic considering Flett's own CV: fashion editor of The Face during the height of 'heroin chic' (which might explain why Flett doesn't like the sight of women with tits and arses), then moving on to Arena, just as it was morphing into Maxim with pretensions.

IO - I won't guarantee it was 6pm.
They led Nightline with it. And I'd bet money they led 6pm with it as well, but not at such poor odds as I would about Nightline.

But, InternationalObserver, am I the only one who remembers when John was telling anyone who'd listen that Campbell Live was, well, going to be a little smarter and more substantial than the competition? I think Russell has said it before, and better, but Campbell Live is really looking more and more like a wasted opportunity - not least to show Campbell's genuine talents to best advantage. I'm not saying every night has to be a graduate school seminar on macroeconomic issues in Ulan Bator, but sorry...

Paris was "one of" but not the first item in both the 5:00 and 5:55pm news trailers, and also one of, but not the first, item that gets read as an upcoming highlight/headline straight after the music at 6:00:00 before they actually "read" the news at 6:01....
Thats close enough to "leading with Paris" for me....

I think Fletch has it right, it ties with my memory. They showed the footage of Paris walking out of jail at about 6.25 ie as soon as the footage came in, but they certainly didn't lead with it. The Campbell footage was a repeat of the 3News footage, but yes, I think he had a live reporter. Nightline may have lead with it at 10.30 but so what? The late bulletin is alway the fluffy stuff, they don't want you skipping off to bed.
The liberation of Paris? er, that was first used by someone about 10 minutes after incarceration.

Yeah, but didn't Ralston also say TVNZ News was going to be about the stories and not the personalities presenting the stories? Didn't Labour promise 20 hours free healthcare?
BTW - I have no allegiance to any channel. And yes I watch and 'enjoy' reality shows. But ...
I guess I prefer Project Runway to The Apprentice.
