  • Don Christie,

National leader John Key says the party may go to the police over secret recordings of MPs at a cocktail function.

Oh boy. Keys needs to realise he is becoming indistinguishable from Winston Peters in how he handles these sort of events. That's not consistent with his image and someone should probably tell him so.

  • Paul Williams,

Maybe National could clear all this up and explain that we're all confused, and do this by saying: here, explained in detail, is what our policies actually are.

Apparently, this is too much to ask!

  • Craig Ranapia,

And to take my own(or GBS's) advice, isn't it actually rather nice that we might have all kinds of freaks and geeks adopted as parliamentary candidates, but not people like this.

A former Tory candidate has pleaded guilty to a campaign of harassment against his Liberal Democrat rivals.

Ian Oakley, who quit as a prospective parliamentary candidate in Watford last month, admitted five charges of criminal damage and two of harassment.

Oakley, of Ryeland Close, West Drayton, west London, asked for 68 other offences to be taken into account.

    [...]

St Albans Magistrates' Court was told Oakley had damaged property belonging to the Lib Dems and had harassed rivals Sal Brinton and Russell Willson.

He slashed tyres and wrecked shutters at the Liberal Democrat headquarters in the town.

He made silent phone calls to Ms Brinton between August 2006 and March this year, and sent her gay and lesbian magazines, the court was told.

Letters addressed to "Sal Bitchton" were also sent to her workplace.

Oakley's campaign against Mr Willson was mounted from February to May this year and included painting graffiti on his home, calling him a "perv".

He also sent letters to him and his backers wrongly accusing Mr Willson of being a "child abuser".

    Eww...

It's one of the great mysteries of contemporary politics, how they managed to sell to us the idea that releasing policies too early gives an unfair advantage to the opponent. Political journalists seems to think it makes perfect sense, which drives me absolutely batty. It's not the bledisloe cup, for chrissakes, you are supposed to reveal your tactics in advance...

  • Gareth Ward,

So who's heard the term "reframing the debate"?

Because when discussion on a left-leaning blog is entirely dominated by the means by which the troublesome statements were technically recorded, rather than the statements themselves (and frankly all through the efforts of one tenacious poster(!)) then someone's earning their Spin Meister salary...

Oh, let's just hold fire on that until something like this goes down under parliamentary privilege.

I'm against this, it's just wrong.

Except in private between consenting adults. Contemplating Bill and Mary getting their freak on gives me entirely the wrong kind of shivers.

Craig no need to wait, that was Judith Collins line not so long ago. I see she still holds a front bench position under the new "gutter free" leadership.

POLICE FIND MISSING NATIONAL PARTY POLICIES.

"I left them on the kitchen bench', smiles English embarrassingly.

No, the policies haven't been stolen. They're in basement, in the safe, and will be put on display before the election, but only under tight security. There's a risk that the Labour Party, short on inspiration and willing to do anything to win this election, will steal them.

Or worse, Arthur Dent will find them... but we know it'll be too late!

Well, Don, if my memory serves Collins was forced to withdraw and apologise because you're not allowed to call another MP a pervert. Rex Widerstrom, on the other hand, is going to win Lotto before he gets any such thing out of Ron Mark.

I'm not even going to mention Trevor Mallard because two half-wits don't make a whole.

Adopt the democratic source and actually be honest witht he electorate?

No chance. it might "scare the horses"

(Someone should probably tell National that we don't use horses any more, and therefore have no tolerance for horseshit)

I'd rather hear the ruth than worry about who and how it was recorded and revealed. If National weren't misleading people they would have nothing to worry about.
