  • Michael Savidge,

yeah fair enough Michael, but I'm a cynic.

    Aren't we all?

But I have to say that I've been genuinely inspired, or more accurately re-inspired, by the Obama campaign. By no means just the man himself, but the very real people power behind the power.

Key has ridden a wave of political momentum that has only given him a ruling mandate - not an ideological one - and, in my naive hopefulness, I'd like to think that a similar type of grassroots urgency from the likes of me and all those who want real social and economic justice just might be able to sway what the next three years delivers.

And cynicism won't deliver that. Are you prepared to try a little harder?

  • Elizabeth,

And cynicism won't deliver that. Are you prepared to try a little harder?

Absolutely. But at the first sign of a return to the Shipley/Birch/et al policies, and a disregard of grassroots urgency, I will stop trying. I will not stand back and watch NZers be shafted again. I'm sure our friends over at Kiwiblog laughed and laughed at the front page of the Dom today and the article about beneficiaries calling help lines on Sat night. I didn't. I cried. That is the grassroots to whom Key must deliver.
I've been inspired by Obama too. I cried last Wed too. Fifty years ago the man wouldn't even have been able to ride at the front of the bus, or drink from the same fountain as McCain. But my cynicism and sadness stems from the fact that on Sat as a nation we appeared to reject the very ideology that propelled Obama to presidency.
Okay I really am drunk now :)

Ah fuck, who am I kidding. I'm more of a cynic than most people I know.

I hope none of my friends read those previous posts. I'll be excommunicated from the exclusive bong brethren.

    That'll fix 'em!

C'mon Lizzy, fight until the last breath and all that.

Just between you and me, I find it better sport than accumulating wealth.

I am glad, for a while, I thought Blue and yellow mixed =green . Fuck it does as a colour but not politically.

I was just on the phone to my mum, she suggested we could pee on the blue to make it green.

  • Susan Snowdon,

You beat me to it, Simon - Bill and Ben seemed particularly popular in the City booths, in Grey Lynn and on Waiheke Island.

Back to the fascinating world of voting patterns... Did anyone else notice that New Plymouth was the only electorate where Bill and Ben got more votes than United Future? Go the old home town! Must be some jokers living there these days.

  • Tom Beard,

    The Muffin Break chain

So it would seem that the Muffin Break demographic fairly closely matches that of the country, with perhaps more Labour & Green voters. Excuse my ignorance, but what is the Muffin Break chain? I've vaguely heard of them, but I'd assumed they were an overseas chain since I don't think I've ever seen one. Where are they?

  • Kyle Matthews,

They're originally Australian, but there's a bunch of stores here in NZ. You find them in every third mall you go into (I believe that's the rule).

Auckland, shopping malls, that sort of place.

  • Robyn Gallagher,

Looking at their website, Muffin Break's Wellington area locations are the mall in Paraparaumu, the mall in Johnsonville, the mall in Porirua, the mall in Lower Hutt and that weird empty mall in Upper Hutt.

Evidently there's not much demand in downtown Wellington for mediocre muffins and coffee (or has Starbucks and Gloria Jeans cornered the market?)

  • Danielle,

    mediocre muffins

Seriously, I must reiterate about the caramel slice. I am really picky about that particular baked good, and they do a very nice one. With a slab of caramel which is actually visible to the naked eye (unlike some other, non-franchised cafes I could mention, who are all coconut base and chocolate icing and the merest sliver of caramel. Bah).

The coffee is not great, though.

I like a good caramel slice. Midnight Espresso in Wellington do a good one (though not as good as the sadly missed ones made by the old management at Sierra Mt Eden).

Worst caramel slice - anything where the "caramel" is actually caramel-flavoured icing. So if Muffin Break can do it well, then ka pai to them.
