Island Life: Gassed Up

  • Sofie Bribiesca,

Was Scott Dixon making a point about the price of milk? Milk = Gas?

  • Julian Melville,

The winner of the Indy 500 always drinks a pint of milk, because Indiana is a big dairy area. Except the year that Emerson Fittipaldi won, because he's vegan. He drank orange juice instead.

The Indycar series uses plant-sourced ethanol as fuel since last year, not fossil fuels (not directly, anyway).

And big congrats to Scott, that's a huge, huge win. Worth waking up for!

  • Graham Reid,

I'm not a motor racing guy at all but driving cautiously to work today (yep, cheaper to drive and get earlybird parking than take the uncertain public transport allegedly available) I ws chuffed for Dixon -- and a thought immediately occured.
If he's up there with Bruce McLaren, does he now get an intermediate school in Auckland named after him?
    And a song by NRA???

I wouldn't mind but it could be a message of encouragement for more "boy racers";-) I felt glad for him also.Nice way to start Monday morning.

I asked the same question, and received an answer, here.

How about a school on Outrageous Fortune? They're great at naming schools.

  • Paul Brislen,

Is it just me or is the Indy Car thing so completely facile? Go straight, turn left, go go go, turn left, go go go...

surely that's how you decide who's very good at ... turning left?

(I'm not a Formula 1 fan either but I do enjoy rally driving)

  • Bob Munro,

Scott Dixon was just trying to drive ‘green’.

"I was trying to save fuel and just see how the car was in traffic," he said.

  • FletcherB,

I'm really proud of what Scott Dixon has acheived, and I dont want to take away from that..... but to become "the equal" of Bruce McLaren.... you dont just have to win important races, but design and make your own championship winning cars...

Only a Bruce and Brabham have managed it so far...

    tomorrow's headline today ...

    Vodafone Exec Slams Dixon Success

Not quite up there with Phil Goff, but if it's a slow news day!

  • Paul Brislen,

It has been a slow news day for about a week now... quite odd really.

I do like motor racing, I do... but the Indy seems so very tedious. In the end I think it comes down to the drivers' ability to maintain their focus for 800 laps.

I did enjoy this week's Top Gear with the 24-hour endurance race. That was very interesting, although I have a sneaking suspicion that Prime is now trimming Top Gear to fit in the astonishing number of ad breaks they have. The previous week they started the show with talk of driving a new Aston Martin and the car simply didn't appear in the show at all. Now that's not cricket. To the Torrents!

Yes I noticed that too. It was like there should have been a final segment about the end of the endurance race but sudddenly we were at the credits. it's a pretty awful programme, men being boys with their toys, but it's so darned entertaining I can't help myself.

And the swine have started to do it to Terry Jones too. There were a couple of complete non-sequiturs in Barbarians the other night where bits seem to have been just hacked out with the modern equivalent of a blunt bronze axe.

And some of the plotlines in Sunday's Ugly Betty ep advanced pretty quickly too. It won't be long before everyone just gets their TV off the web.
    (oh, ... already happening)

  • 3410,

    Prime sez:

Please be assured that Prime are screening full unedited episodes of the new season of Top Gear. However the new season is slightly different to the 'original' BBC form as the BBC edit their international version down slightly.

First I heard of Idiot-Savant's blog was about this time of year. I thought cool a kiwi blogging about indy/nascar. Very disappointing.
