Michael Men are made more Responsible for their actions but are held less Responsible for their children by the Justice Department. And this is liberation? No - this is the cycle continuing. .
Liberation ?? Darn, which way did it go, I missed it :)More info about Pot needs to be out there (he he).
There hasn't been a mass shooting in NZ without it!
It wasn't an axe murder it was a Rasta Ritual?
Doh ! An unexpected slur. Share it, what are you on ?Jackie God, we spend enough time as adults dealing with the hard stuff. Leave the kids alone.
I agree but it seems that is getting less achievable and kids' bullshit detectors are on *full* at all times these days. Our schools already teach a bit of civics - my son's does anyway - and dare I say it, many girls are quite capable at 16 and could vote as intelligently as most of the rest of the population if they wanted to, and so probably could most of the boys.IO__ What I can't fathom is why 16 and not 17 or 15?__
Its probably about sex. -
The whole liberation and gender bias is meant to be a general discussion. I have no 1st hand experience here just observations of a few facts.
I was quite sober and still that wasn't coherent. A wee joke on – out there - ok maybe not. All drugs are dangerous but the myths that surround Pot and its real dangers needs to be further publicised to youth. Alcohol affects every aspect of a person, normally over time. Pots impacts are less known but when observed tend to be more server (mental health wise).
Rights & Responsibilities need to be addressed. 17yr old soldiers don't serve on operations without mums signature, even then by the time they're trained and on their way they're likely to be 18 - legal adult but still a kid. 15yrs for driving shud go up so when they muck up they can be held responsible for it. Intellegence isn't an issue when it comes to the vote. Don't we all lament at election time that the Rational voter doesn't exist - even if 'we' win the question of how did that guy/gal get in? always come up.
Certainly all the money and effort put into boy racers doesn't stop the majority drink driver = middle aged men. -
Guys get custodial sentences at a 3:1 ratio compared to Gals.
So Yes Women have Rights but with reduced Responsibilities.
Thanks Michael, now presumably you can point to the bit where it says that guys get custodial sentences at a 3:1 ratio compared to gals for the same crimes?
All you've shown so far is that women either don't commit as many crimes that have custodial sentences as men, or get away with those crimes when they do commit them.
I know which of those options I'd bet on, but you seem to believe it's the second option, and I'd be interested in seeing your evidence.

I had a little bit to do with some members of the youth parliament in the late 1990s. The half-a-dozen or so that I met were mature, intelligent, responsible, diverse young people. They had debates in parliament that were considered, cultured, intelligent, and addressing exactly the issues affecting young people in our society.
Personally therefore I'm not only in favour of them being able to vote, I'm in favour of them running the country. Things would be a hell of a lot better than the power-hungry, immature twerps that we end up electing these days, who view parliament as some sort of sandpit battleground to be fought out through the media.
Like any age group you'll get a fair bunch of idiots, immature people, or people who are completely uninformed when it comes time to vote. I suspect though that they'll have the worst voting turnout in terms of percentage of eligible voters, and a lot of those ones will drop off.
And I'm not sure if being uninformed, idiotic, or immature are reasons to exclude voting anyway. There's plenty of potential in 16 and 17 year olds. The question really should be is there anything inherent to being 16/17 that should exclude you from making serious political decisions? I think the answer at that age is 'no'.
-
I wonder what percentage of 16-17 voters would vote for the Green Party?

This thread is getting a bit heavy. In the meantime, in the real world Prince William, Middleton rekindle romance.
Hope they are old enough.

It do'snt mater we live in a democratic country. people can vote "no confidence to vote" if they want.
Ummm last time I checked there wasn't a "no confidence" option on ballot papers - and I quized Elections about it who said that if I wanted to vote no confidence I should not vote (which totally misses the point as not voting is very different from expressing a no confidence vote).

my comment was more aimed at looking at Sues motivation for the proposal....
a cynical person may say it is a kind of gerrymandering (via age rather than geography)
Personally i think it is pretty cool that someone is looking out for young people down there in Wellington. Most of the debate that comes out of the beehive regarding young people is focussed on their 'problems' and is very negative... almost like they are a different species who are evil and need containing (boy-racing, crime seem to popular topics for Bob Clarkson, my local MP) -

Are the kids up with a little history: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meiji_RestorationMeiji Restoration - All the players were under 30yrs ok not kids.
The thought being they had no vested in the Status Quo (or other geriatric rock bands) and so started a new civilisation from which Japan nearly took 1/2 the world.Meiji Rest. is responsible for Japanese Beer - gotta be good.
And fought against Tom Cruise - righteous. -

I see your point but must dispute any action that is more inclusive to be called gerrymandering.
-
Michael: "I see your point but must dispute any action that is more inclusive to be called gerrymandering."
yes I agree.
It has kind of evolved to deal with proportional representaion - so what is this called? Suemandering? -
Ta Steven - I actually feel it's quite a big point which a lot of people miss.
As another interesting note when I was speaking with Elections they mentioned that there was no "minimum number of votes" for a valid election - which I found pretty fascinating (and worked into a short story later on down the track).
